Motivational Theories

Over the years, many have studied the behavior of individuals and what lies beneath their motivation. To completely understand these concepts we must fully understand the meaning of motivation. I will first discuss the definition of motivation, then I will briefly present three different motivational theories, the pros and cons of each, and strategies for which organizations can use in order to successfully implement motivational tactics.

The New Penguin Business Dictionary defines motivation as “The effort and drive to satisfy an individual need, e.g. a person might work, and work harder, because of a need for money and status.” (2003). Understanding what drives people to do something, enables managers to help employees maintain focus for the good of the organization.

Modern day motivational theories are all derived from the early theorists such as Taylor, Maslow, Herzberg, Mayo, and McClelland. Taylor’s theory was that individuals were motivated by pay. Maslow’s theory, probably the most recognized, was based on an individual’s basic needs – physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization, while Herzberg’s theory focused on an individual’s attitude towards their job and/or job duties. Mayo’s theory was based on meeting an individual’s social needs in order to achieve motivation. McClelland’s theory focuses on the need for achievement, the need for power, and the need for affiliation. There are some of these same concepts incorporated into the modern theories in which I will present next.

The first theory is that of the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivations also know as Self-Determination Theory developed by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci of the University of Rochester. This theory’s basic foundation focuses on intrinsic, (something that comes from within one’s self) and extrinsic (something that comes from outside one’s self) forms of motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000).     According to Atkinson (1958/1983) and McClelland (1987), a motive is a person’s internal disposition to be concerned with and approach positive incentives and avoid negative incentives (pg. 3). There are several factors that underline human motivation in relation to behavior, e.g., people eat to reduce hunger or enroll in college to obtain a degree. An incentive is the anticipated reward or aversive event available in the environment (pg. 3). Motivation is an incentive driven emotion; motivation differs from each individual. The importance of personal gain is differentiated from person to person, for example, Tony is motivated to complete college in pursuit of obtaining a better career, and whereas Timothy lacks motivation in college his motivation may be geared toward becoming an expert in his current career field. Motivation has to have incentive it makes no sense just be motivated. What is the incentive to the motivation? For example, Alicia tells her coworkers that she is motivated to work today. Motivation is “the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal.” In laymen terms motivation has been said to be a reasoning of why people do the things that they do or say some of the things they say and want some of the things they want.     Motivation derives from the Latin word “movere” which means to move. Luthans (1998) defines motivation as “a process which begins with physiological or psychological need or deficiency which triggers behaviour or a drive that is aimed at a goal or an incentive“. In other words, an individual must feel a need to an extent that will drive them to satisfying it. Some psychologists and business people define motivation as the thing that makes people do something, which usually they will not do. Motivation is a fundamental psychological approach where the management process of inducing employee’s behaviour established on the evidence of what causes people to click (Luthans, 1998). Theories of motivation presume that motivational behaviour happens due to work fulfils their psychological needs or because there appears to be a link between effort and performance and performance and value of outcomes (R. Fincham & P. Rhodes 2009). There are two types of motivational theories: content theories, which focus on the specific identity of what it is deep down in an individual or his environment that stimulates and assists behaviour. In addition, process theories that strive to understand how specific variables interact and affect each other to create certain kinds of behaviour.…

    According to Jerald Greenberg (1999) scientist have defined motivations “as the process of arousing, directing and maintaining behavior towards a goal”. The act of arousing is related to the desire and vigor to produce. Directing is the election of behavior, and maintenance is the inclination to behave a certain manner until the desired outcome is met (Greenberg 1999).
