.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -.. Morse code was a significant invention during the middle 19th century but why was it important, who made it, how does it work, and is it still used today.

Samuel Finley Breese Morse was an American artist and inventor widely known for his invention of the single wire telegraph and co-inventor of Morse code. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts April 27 1791. Samuel got most of his education from the Yale University of Boston. On February 1825, after giving birth to their third child, Lucretia (Samuel’s wife) passed away. Morse was on his way home from working when he heard his wife was very ill, and by the time he

The most the most used letters are given shorter sequences of dots and dashes. For example, m the most common letter used in the English language (E) is represented by a single dot. The first telegraphs made clicking sounds as they marked the moving paper. Eventually these papers became unnecessary because operators learned it as a language instead of reading of a page of paper. These codes were sent through a single wire, because radio waves were not made for another 30 years. There are multiple advantages of Morse code because it is for communication and faster than sending a letter to someone. Morse code is fairly cheap price to use only about 25 cents for 10 words or less. The system is only a single cord for communication so it doesn’t get any interference. But, when there is advantages there is disadvantages, Morse code is very time consuming to use. You would have to learn Morse code by the sound of the clicks to be better at it. Morse code was a great way for sending distress signals from boats equipped with radio waves. For example, the biggest boat, titanic, used Morse code to call for rescue ships in order to save as much as possible. Sometimes people would use it in prison to talk to another in secret. Sometimes the use it in popular shows like the walking …show more content…
Soon after the telegraphs primer in Europe it became that the original Morse code was insufficient of transmissions of non-English text. To fix this Alfred Vail created the international Morse code. The two machines were very alike but however the international Morse code was simpler and more precise. For example, the original Morse code a pattern of dots and dashes to represent some of the letters. The international Morse code uses combinations of dots and dashes to represent all letters. Including, the international Morse code uses dashes of consistent length rather than variations of lengths used in the original

It was the first written language ever recorded (Doc. 1). The Sumerians would use a metal tool, called a stylus, to write on clay tablets (OI). They used cuneiform to keep records, document business dealings, and pass…

Generation Z would have no qualms with crowning the iPhone the most influential invention in the history of communications. Seasoned historians, however, might argue that a bundle of cables in combination with an electrical current, called the telegraph, should take the prize for the most influential invention. The mid-19th Century implementation of the telegraph, single-handedly, brought about enormous change to the once asymmetric relationship between the tempo of domestic politics and the speed of transatlantic communication. For the first time, communication was independent of transportation and could keep up with the speed of diplomacy. It’s widespread use and growing industrial complex proved to be a crucial component of political development in the shifting nature of…

“It [the telegraph] worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations” (“Morse Code and The Telegraph”). Basically, the telegraph would send electrical impulses over a long wire laid between two points connected by telegraph stations, and once the electricity hit the other station it would pick up the impulses. These electrical impulses were received in a code of dots and dashes called Morse code made by Samuel Morse (Mountjoy 32). Samuel Morse was one of the top contributors to the telegraph along with William Sturgeon and Joseph Henry (Doss 40; Mountjoy 32). Shockingly, the messages sent by telegraph were delivered almost instantly no matter how far (Mountjoy 30). Additionally, these messages were called telegrams, cablegrams, wires, and a cable because of the way they were sent (31). Before the war, the war department in the government did not have the telegraph. To communicate, they sent letters by a person on horseback (Wheeler). By the time the war started, there were about 50,000 miles of telegraph wires strung (Mountjoy 33). In 1857, the Confederates only had 107 telegraph stations compared to the 1,467 that the Union had (Allen and Allen 116). Because of the need to communicate during the war, the Union established a telegraph corps in 1661 with 1,200 operators. To gain an advantage in battle, soldiers would carry telegraph lines into battle areas and other places…

When Bell spoke into the open end of the drum-like device, his voice made the paper and needle vibrate. The vibrations were then converted into an electric current which travelled along the wire to the receiver.” The success of it was based on its antecedents, the telegraph and morse code. Chris Russel (2024) stated that they help people to communicate by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. In addition, the Morse code was invented, assigning a set of dots and dashes to each letter of the alphabet.…

The American Civil War was not just another battle in world history — it changed the way that wars are fought using new inventions. The Civil War was fought from 1861-1865, in the early 1800’s, the Industrial Revolution was taking place. By the end of the Industrial Revolution, the North and the South had very different economies. In the North, there were many factories, which meant that the North was almost entirely self reliant. On the other hand, the South’s economy was built around the selling of raw materials that slaves produced, which meant that the South depended on other countries. This difference of economies changed the outcome of the Civil War because the North was able to produce necessary supplies to win a war. While many factors…
