Morro Bay Case Study
Summary:
Evaluating how to obtain conservation goals, such as species or biodiversity protection at the lowest economic cost possible is an important aspect of conservation planning. The affect of species conservation target values on the selection frequency of parcels for conservation was evaluated using Marxan software. Target values are set values that represent a set percentage of species in a region; in this analysis, as expected when target values were increased, the conservation areas expanded.
Problem:
Morro Bay watershed hosts a variety of species some of which are endangered and/or endemic to the region; the area also serves as a popular tourist destination. Managing the area, and conserving the species within the area is important; however, doing this while minimizing costs requires valuable economic and ecological information to be analyzed on a spatial scale.
Approach:
Marxan software is used to identify areas, or

Not surprisingly, when increasing the conservation targets, the number of planning units also increased. When increasing the target value for the twelve endangered species in the region, and leaving the target value constant for all other species the output changed dramatically, and the number of planning units selected more frequently increased (Figure 1).

Figure 1: The summed solution of Morro Bay Watershed planning unit selection frequency in Marxan. Areas selected most frequently represent the most cost effective conservation areas to obtain the given target value for the conservation of 140 species. Top right shows the output when the target for all species is 30% conservation. Top left shows 50% conservation for all species. Bottom right shows 100% conservation target for the 12 endangered species, and a 50% target for all other species. Bottom left shows 95% conservation target for endangered species, and 30% target for all other species.

Hastings Point is a small coastal town located in New South Wales that is sounded by a national park. Hastings point has been a great location for tourists due to its marine wildlife, beaches and fishing. This destination is home to a magnificent rocky shore perfectly suited for a vast majority and wide range of marine wildlife. The rocky shore has a wide spread of both biotic and abiotic factors which provides a suitable ecosystem for all wildlife but unfortunately this unindustrialized location is becoming over developed. This takes a toll on Hastings point ecosystem immensely because the estuary, beach and the living organisms are slowly diminishing in numbers whilst the waters of the estuary are being polluted and contaminated. This is due to the over populating and the rapid building development around the area. A few members of the community are trying to resolve this issue however the council is yet to act on their suggestions and if everyone continues to refuse to do anything about it then Hastings Point ecosystem will eventually get diminished.…

The watershed my partner and I chose to implement techniques to eliminate invasive plant species is the American River watershed. The American River drainage covers 1900 square miles of the Tahoe and El Dorado National Forests, including the Granite Chief Wilderness and Desolation Wilderness. Flowing west from the peaks of the northern Sierra Nevada west of Lake Tahoe, its streams gradually converge into the South, Middle and North Forks of the American River. It is a classic multi-use watershed, supporting mining, hydroelectric generation, timber cultivation, and many forms of recreation.…

Environmental impacts were developed based upon the ability of a potential management alternative to increase and/or protect aquatic ecological habitat as well as meet water quality standards. Lake Allatoona ecosystem economic impacts were founded for various management options and were split into two main categories: (1) BMP costs as an indicator of direct economic impacts; and (2) land opportunity costs as an indicator of indirect economic impacts (epa.gov). Human native environment clarification, fragmentation, degradation, and abolition present the enormous harm to natural ecosystems and biodiversity and should be influenced by responsible and adequate accentuations for the future preservation of intact ecosystems. Such computations should be assembled through choices made by various stages of government (epa.gov). All segments of people should get involve to achieve and corporate wildlife and native plant conservation measures that conserve ecosystems and our wildlife inheritance for the coming generations. The implication of species interactions in Lake Allatoona ecosystems management and restoration. As a result of natural or anthropogenic actions, habitat may be lost and degraded (Adrian, 2015). In turn, this causes changes in bio-diversity, the variation of life on earth and the interactions between these organisms, and accordingly, the cessation of ecosystem services (World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), 2015). Hastings’ Point is a biodiversity hotspot, and home to various threatened and endangered ecological communities (Department of the Environment , 2015). Although highly regulated in NSW, the clearing of all types of vegetation has placed Australia in the top ten land clearing nations in the world. In the past, between the years of 1984 and 1989, the Western Lands Commission allowed clearing licenses for over 560,000 hectares along the NSW Coast, particularly the Hastings Point (Figure. 1) (Department of Primary Industries, 2015) (Evans, 2015). This clearing increases sedimentation of waterways, erosion and lowers the quality of water in that of estuaries and ocean areas (NSW Government , 2015). Additionally, impoundments trap sediment eroded from upstream regions, resulting in potential downstream erosion, thus, stream bed depressing, and reducing habitat variability downstream (NSW Government , 2015). Consequently, this leads to the direct loss of native…

In 1982 the NFMA published the Planning Regulations, a process that planned to integrate the many interests concerning the forests. There are ten major steps to this process. Identify issues, concerns, and opportunities (ICOs); Develop planning criteria; Collect data and information necessary to address ICOs; Analyze the management situation (AMS); Formulate a broad range of alternatives including a 'no action, alternative; Estimate the effects of each alternative on the environment, the economy, and society; Evaluate alternatives by comparing how well each resolves the ICOs; Select a preferred alternative; Implement the plan by updating all uses of the forest into conformity of the forest plan; and monitor and evaluate the plan by comparing the actual biological effects of the plan to the projections.…
