Abstract
Moringa seeds are known to contain an antimicrobial substance, which gets rid of microorganisms that suppresses growth. This investigatory project aims to prove that Moringa seeds can be used to purify contaminated water. The benefits of this investigatory project is that the purified water may be used in our everyday lives, may help in the preservation of water, fewer expenses would occur and adds knowledge towards the purification of water. In this experiment, Moringa seeds, a mortar, a clean cloth and water will be used to conduct the experiment.

When the experiment was conducted, two (2) Moringa seeds were used per trial. The whitish kernel fluid, found inside the Moringa seeds, were crushed with the use of a mortar or stone until it resulted to having a powder texture. Mixed in a small cup, was the powder with a small quantity of clean water. The mixture was poured into the contaminated water that was intended to purify and was quickly stirred for about thirty (30) seconds then continued stirring the water after a few minutes. We observed the water every few minutes and recorded the data. The Moringa seeds took an hour long to purify the contaminated water which proves that Moringa seeds can be used to purify contaminated water.

We first combine 15 mL of water with 1 g of crushed, ground cloves in a 25-mL round-bottom flask. Then added a spin bar to the 25-mL round-bottom flask and assembled the microscale distillation apparatus. We made certain that the ground cloves were well wetted. We maintained the temperature of the sand bath at approximately 130 °C and wrapped the bottom of the still with aluminum foil. Then periodically transfer the distillate from the Hickman head to a 15 mL screw cap centrifuge tube and continue the steam distillation until 5–8 mL of distillate have been collected. Then we started the extraction process by adding 2 mL of CH2Cl3 to the water–eugenol emulsion. Cap the tube and shake it frequently. We then allowed the layers to separate and transferred the CH2Cl2–eugenol solution to a clean, dry 5- mL conical vial. We made sure no water was transferred in this step. Then we added 1 mL of CH2Cl2 to the water–eugenol emulsion, cap and shake the tube. Allowed the layers to separate and transfer the CH2Cl2–eugenol solution to the 5-mL vial used previously and made certain that no water is transferred during this step. We then added 1 mL of CH2Cl2 to the water–eugenol emulsion and shook the tube. We allowed the layers to separate and transferred the CH2Cl2–eugenol solution to the 5-mL vial used in previous step. Although not all water can be used for drinking purposes, in many places, water that is drinkable- is polluted or deluded by many agricultural and industrial motives and damage humans have caused (Friend). In this experiment, the goal is not to purify muddy water completely from microorganisms and bacteria, but to find the most efficient way to cleanse it from the dirt and soil particles that cause the murky color using physical…

The purpose of the pea seeds germination lab is to determine whether pea seeds will sprout with the absence of a complete water solution and replaced by Listerine Mouthwash. Water is the most basic and useful, natural resources for all living things. Water is extremely responsible for carrying all life functions within the cell. Life cannot exist on earth without the presence of water. In this lab we will investigate to see if seeds can germinate with a substance which its inactive ingredient is water. Since seeds require water in order for its embryo to rise up, one may conclude that mouthwash which contains a small regiment of water molecules can indeed provide for the environment of seed germination. One concept that will also be determined is whether a dormant seed can sprout under a fairly good temperature, the right amount of oxygen, and a mouthwash solution. In this lab, the experiment will distinguish whether a seed would sprout meeting only some of its requirements.…

Water treatment consists of removing very small particles by flocculation. The water is sand filtered to remove bigger particles. A 2m deep bed of sand is used. Finally, it is treated with chlorine to kill microorganisms as disinfection is needed to ensure concentrations are acceptably low. Water testing is carried out for ions, colour, pH, hardness, turbidity, conductivity, micro-organisms. Alternative methods of filtration such as membrane filtration may be both more efficient in removing particles including microorganisms such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. However, these techniques are expensive to execute.…

The combination of simple filtration and low-temperature sterilization can do the same work as the solar system do. The experiment shows that “filtration of raw water through four layered cotton-sari cloth (250μm) reduced the coliform count and further heating to sub-boiling temperatures (55–60°C) for less than an hour resulted in complete inactivation of coliforms. (Nimbkar and Rajvanshi 519)” The authors also mentioned that this is a “feasible and environmentally sustainable technique of disinfection to obtain clean drinking water. (Nimbkar and Rajvanshi 519)” If the methods is mature enough, it can also solve the water problem in the area without sufficient…

The lab was conducted at the McBride residence. For this experiment vegetable oil, vinegar and liquid detergent was use to contaminate the water. Testing of how ground water is affected by different contaminants was the bases of the experiment. The results were interesting in that when vinegar is filtered through dirt it came out fairly clean, it also changed the scent. This shows that maybe we can find a way to find a safer choice on how we filter and purify water. The use of sand, charcoal and gravel was used as an aquifer to exact the water. Bleach was used to sterilize the contaminated water and the process. For the last lab, tap, Dasani and Fiji water were tested with ammonia, chloride, iron and phosphate to determine which water is better for humans to drink. The results were that the vinegar changed the scent and the laundry detergent changed…

In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater were investigated. First, I will observe the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the largest quality of contamination to the water, while the laundry detergent will just create a bad smell to it. Considering the smells and thickness to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with little or no contamination in it. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

This report analyses the ability of ordinary substances to pollute water sources, filtration techniques, as well as the quality of tap and bottled waters. This report discusses the availability of clean water sources, factors that affects the quality of water, agents of water contamination, and how the earth naturally filters impurities from water. The first experiment tested groundwater contaminants and their effects on drinking water quality using oil, vinegar and laundry soap. In the second test, sand, grave, and charcoal creates a water filter that successfully screens dirt particles from a water sample. The third laboratory identified contaminants and the quality of three water sources; tap, Dasani, and Fiji bottled water. Of the three, the bottled water I found was highly acidic. Results helped to determine the high probability of typical human activities to add impurities to water we drink. This report identifies the need of water quality research, in addition to its importance to societies. The fundamentals of Water Quality management and examination…

The treatment methods and efficiencies depend on these characteristics. The characteristic of grey water depends on the source varying based on the lifestyle, customs, installations and the various use of chemicals and proportions of the same, thus varying from place to place and time to time (Eriksson et al., 2002; Edwin et al., 2014). One of the most important characteristic of grey water is that it has infection causing properties due to the presence of fecal coliforms, which is more prevalent in houses having toddlers and infants (Surendran and Wheatley 1998). The water characteristics are considered to be varied as per the distribution networks of both grey water and that of potable…
