MORE THAN A CARPENTER by Josh McDowell and Sean McDowell

Jesus claimed to be God, and to him it was of fundamental importance that men and women believed him to be who he was. Either we believe him or we don’t.
Chapter 3, page 27

Jesus was God and the basis of his life, his work and his passion was to lead people to the inevitable conclusion that He was Lord of their life and they needed to follow Him to the Father.

The whole question of whether Jesus was who he said he was or not in the minds of the people rests on one of the three conclusions thinking people could come to: Lord, Liar or Lunatic. Is there any other choice? Could Jesus be legend? Like a character out of science fiction or literature, Jesus could be a figment of someone’s imagination; rather than real life flesh and blood person. People in Jesus’ time most certainly had different understandings of who Jesus was, for example that He became the Son of
God when God adopted Him at His baptism (Mark’s view perhaps?) or that He became the Son of God when He was born of a virgin (which is when He came into existence, according to Luke). Jesus as liar is harder to establish because if when Jesus made his claims he knew that he was not God, then he was lying and deliberately deceiving his followers. But, if he was a liar, then he was also a hypocrite because he taught others to be honest at whatever cost. 1

Reading the book has given me a new insight into his life and the way that he has affected the lives of the author, his son and the people who were utilized in the writing of this book. It is particularly interesting to me to consider this question of whether Jesus was lord, liar or lunatic, because I had really never considered this question. I believe it is a suitable academic

    - I think people these days are like Thomas if they do not have a real proof they will not believe. Intellectually they cannot comprehend how God can be three people at the same time. Where is the proof that he died on the cross and that He rose again. According to them this does not make any sense, does not have any logic or a reasonable explanation.…

In the book, “More than a Carpenter,” Josh McDowell shows how Jesus Christ was more than just a teacher of good principles or a significant person in history. He was God in the flesh who entered the world and exclusively proved His deity. This book shows how Jesus is different from religious historical figures, guides the reader through proofs of Christianity, and logically shows that Jesus Christ was Lord. He shows that Jesus would not have died for a lie and that if Jesus did not rise from the grave, then he would not be the Messiah. Christ has changed many lives because he lived a perfect life, died on the cross for everyone’s sins, and rose from the grave.…

Christ started out as exalted. He was God from the beginning, but in-spite of this fact Jesus choose to humble himself. In this way of looking at it, we see Christ as exalted, then He is humiliated. Finally we see that He is exalted again. It seems that He was even exalted higher then He ever was. In this exaltation, everyone will declare Him to be Jesus Christ the Lord.…

Now how do we know Jesus is God? Acts 10:38 reads, “ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” God appointed him to be the Christ. His own people declared him to be the true prophet, their Messiah. In John 1:41, Andrew tells his brother Simon upon their becoming disciples of Christ that” We have found the Messiah.” In Romans 9 Paul is expressing his anguish for his people of Israel over their rejection of Jesus Christ when in verse 5 he says concerning Israel’s bloodline, “ Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen! “…

Once the belief that Jesus was not God started becoming popular, the Christian leaders saw that they needed to do something about it. In 325, they held the Council of Nicea. They felt that they had to put Arianism to rest. People from all over came to this council. It was a very big deal that someone was questioning the deity of Jesus. At this Council, they decided that Jesus was in fact God. Since Arius was trying to prove people…

Jesus was more than just the proclaimer of the kingdom of God but He carried the kingdom of God to men thru His teachings and works. The point of emphasis is on the fact that these were Jesus’ own words and actions or those that he sent out in His name. God chose to work thru Jesus. He knew that a new age had begun and this was good news unto man. It was required of men to personally respond to Jesus in faith and discipleship in order to enter the…

The second fact is that Jesus’ disciples believed that He rose and appeared to them. What could transform a group of “fearful, cowering individuals who denied and abandoned Him [Jesus] at His arrest and execution into bold proclaimers of the gospel of the risen Lord” (Habermas & Licona, 2004, p. 50)? These men had nothing to gain from their claims. In fact, they remained consistent with their beliefs even in the face of beatings, torture, imprisonment, and their own martyrdom. Nine early and independent sources confirm that the disciples claimed the resurrection. These fall into three categories: the testimony of Paul about the disciples, the early church’s oral tradition, and the written works of the early church. Succinctly put, even when merely viewing the New Testament as an ancient collection of writings, there is strong evidence to assert…
