If you hold the parent's 100% responsable for raising the children then yes you are correct. But society in general has eroded a lot lately. And yes the media and pop culture has glorified celebrities who drink and drive, go to prison and openly do cocaine. So you may want to factor that in as well. But yes it is the parents job to explain this to their kids, and some are not. So the kids are just doing what they see.

It's basically other parents. It's all well and good raising your own kids to be morally productive members of society, but if other parents don't do the same and their kids turn out to be immoral sociopaths then it's not going to help your kids lives if they end up mixing with them in school, etc.

The only way you can avoid the moral decline is to live in an area that is known for its higher standards unfortunately.

I would say that the media causes some moral decline. Sex and violence are now so common place on TV where 30 years ago they weren't.

After the generation of our parents and grandparents, I believe that we’re both more and less moral than they were. As there were a lot of generations before us, there were many rules and regulations that they had to follow as children. It’s a totally different world today if you were to compare it with the way the world was back in the 70’s and 80’s. There are many reasons as to why we’re both more and less moral but it shouldn’t affect how we should act and treat other people.…

The media’s have both positive and negative in regards to teaching sexually responsibility. They are increasing awareness to STD’s and HIV, but due to increased stimuli to sexuality the more our preteens and teenagers want to engage into having sex and because of this we are experiencing higher rates of teen pregnancy (babies having babies) because of television shows that show teens having sexual relations, getting pregnant, and making it look nonchalant as far as consequences goes.…

In my opinion media shouldn't be held responsible for corrupting the society because there are many other factors which contribute to the corruption of younger kids in a society. Television, Music and video games are held responsible all the time when something goes wrong in a society regarding the kids. Factors like personal issues and lack of understanding and also the miscommunications between kids and the adults are other reasons which add up to the reasons for the "desensitization" of younger audiences. Regardless, media does have a negative impact on the society, especially the children`s, due to the popularity of media that is presented and promoted in our everyday life's. It allows younger viewers to believe that the media is more genuine than actual reality, therefore creating aggressiveness and attitude changes in youngsters, creating major impacts on the future of the society.…

    The Moral Instinct

“The stirrings of morality emerge early in childhood” (Pinker 27). According to Pinker, our morality develops as we grow up; as we mature, our morality matures. He claims that morality is something that we have already when we are born and that morality is made up from many things such as the genes we obtain from our parents or the environment that we live in, which reflects the morality we have and the moral judgment that we possess. I for one agree with this statement; I personally believe that through experience and just normal day living, our morality forms and molds into what it is today. Like how the saying goes, “We learn from our mistakes.” That saying defines what Pinker is suggesting about the correlation between morality and our surroundings.…

Many people assume that good ethical behavior is part of an individual’s makeup but in reality ethical behavior is learned and therefore not the same for everyone. Ethical and moral behavior begins developing from the time individuals are young and continues to develop and change during adulthood. It is important to understand that the initial ethical values a person gains usually come from the home environment and are highly influenced by the ethical behavior displayed by parents and family members. Should this life be impacted by crime and violence then this behavior could become the norm and this individual’s ethical values and standards would be outside of the societal norm. As individuals grow into adults life experiences continue to impact ethical and moral standards. Many people live by the assumption that while something may be unethical it is not illegal so no one cares but right and wrong do not always deal in legalities. Just because something is not illegal does not make it right.…

    Jacoby vs Rhodes

In his essay, “A Desensitized Society Drenched in Sleaze, ” Jeff Jacoby argues that a sex and violence filled media has desensitized society by making extremely obscene actions almost a norm. According to Jacoby, entertainment through means of television, cinema, and music is so sex and violence drenched that this new generation we live in is accustomed to offensive behavior. Because of the boost of offensive actions in the media, people see such actions as normal to a point where we do not think such acts are offensive anymore as compared to society’s sensitive minds of the past. In addition, he believes that this media desensitizes and corrupts people and their actions, leading them to perform extremely violent, outrageous crimes and behavior. Jacoby concludes that we have grown jaded because “depravity becomes more and more tolerable because less and less scandalizes us” (667).…

I am twenty-six years old today and when I reflect back on my childhood to the media sex and violence, I don’t remember much because my parents had complete control over what we were able to watch and listen to. If my parents wanted to watch a movie that they felt was in appropriate for my age, they would send me to a different room or else watch it when I went to bed. I do remember that bullying was becoming a larger issue. My mom was a school bus driver for a few years when I was little and there would be fights breaking out with high school students. My mom would have to get in the middle of it and try to get them to stop. I remember one kid yelling out on the school bus “where did you learn those moves?” and the high school student said from a movie. That memory will always be with me because that fight was a very brutal fight. There was lots of blood involved and my mom was threatened to be killed. That was very scary for me and knowing that the student learned how to fight like that from a movie makes me think that the media has a large effect on people. When I talked to my mom about the media sex and violence, she told me that it was…

    Hasty Moral Judgments

    • 298 Words
    • 1 Page

Human beings make hasty moral judgments constantly, sometimes involuntarily. Our predispositions, whether they are based off opinion or upbringing, often lead us to superficial judgments, with little to no prior knowledge of the individual whom we are judging. Issues like pornography, capital punishment, and abortion strike people at their core. Some are even willing to protest in support of their opposition. These are indeed loaded topics, surrounded by a great deal of controversy; a fight waiting to happen, if you will. So, what is it about these issues that make us question peoples moral compasses? To make proper assessments about the people around us, we must first recognize flaws in our own thinking. We must question what we ourselves deem good or bad before we analyze someone else’s morality. For instance, since prostitution is generally looked down upon, people do not perceive them as honest, nor are they regarded as people with good intentions. People misguidedly use the label Prostitute as a way to judge an individual person. People are full and complex. We possess a wide variety of traits, and how you make your money may say a little about you, but it surely does not define your morality. Hastily judging someone’s morality is not an easy problem to fix; however, if everyone was more analytical, moral judgments would be a bit more reasonable. Once we are aware of this information, it is our duty to spread it. As a society, we have achieved amazing feats of innovation because we are able to deduce, and intelligently formulate what is proper and what is not. Perhaps if we conducted ourselves in the same manner regarding our moral judgments, humanity would achieve some remarkable things as well.…

Parents, family members and friends influence our thoughts and beliefs for better. As we develop our values and ethics it is through past experiences whether it is positive or negative experiences that help mold us as adults. I developed ethics and values when I was young. I was taught to know right from wrong at a young age. I was punished if I lied or did something wrong and both parents has high standards and morals that they wanted me to abide by. They taught me that cheating, stealing and lying would not be tolerated. I would be held responsible if I did any of these unethical behaviors. They taught me to be truthful, humble, and treat others how you wanted to be…

In its most current state, television shows force its younger viewers to grow up faster, making younger and younger kids do adult things. These reality shows exemplify things such as sex, drugs, violence, and self-harm. Television producers these days simply have no problem exposing the youth to this rubbish. In fact, the producers are specifically targeting the youth with their unmoral and controversial shows. They often reward the rebel characters with extra TV time or book them for another reality show, while the moral and respectable characters are made out to be boring and hardly ever get rewarded. America keeps asking what is making each generation less and less moral, but they fail to recognize what kinds of examples are being set. Children have not become more influential, they simply have been influenced by worse things. In the past few years, there has been a major change to reality television that diminishes its moral teaching reputation. When your parents were born, your grandparents taught them what they thought was right and wrong, and the difference between good or bad. This instilled a way of thinking for your parents that helped them to continue on the right path before, during and after they had you. They passed what they knew down to you and taught you to behave ethically as well. It might sound repetitive when you think about it this way, but it’s necessary for a better way of life.…
