Montresor And Fortunato Similarities
Unlike Montresor, Fortunato is short and round with a round face. While Fortunato introduced himself to the class, Montresor couldn’t help noticing the odd apparel he sported. A baggy pair of jeans and the most oversized button up possible. Fortunato not only wore ill fitting clothing, but the articles are boldly colored with red and purple.
“… My family and I move around a lot for father’s work, so now we are here,” says Fortunato before the advisor points to an empty desk in front of Montresor. As he hobbles towards his new desk Montresor can’t help feeling nervous, will Fortunato be like his pupils? Montresor hopes this isn’t the case. The rest of the class talks amid themselves and work on assignments, but Montresor imagines what Fortunato is like. While Fortunato makes his way slowly to the desk, Montresor is daydreaming about the friendship they could have. Walking to classes and eating lunch together, maybe doing homework at each other’s homes and having dinner together. He is kicked out of the daydream when Fortunato plopped into the desk chair, which made a slight clanging between tile and metal. After putting is knapsack

Montresor baits Fortunato by using his weakness, the love of wine. Another weakness he displays is his ego and Montresor knows this. It doesn 't take much for him to be baited into sampling his supposed newly acquired pipe of amontillado. During the trip in the catacombs Montresor compels him many times to return to the surface because of his cold, but Fortunato being drunk and a fool wants to be the one to sample the amontillado. He fails to understand the foreshadowing that Montresor provides him with the mason 's trowel, even when he asks about the Montresor coat of arms. "A huge human foot d 'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel" (Poe 208). He must not have realized how serious Montresor takes his pride. When he finally has him chained to the wall he is very shocked. His disbelief that his friend lured him to his death leaves him practically speechless. He quickly sobers up and begins to moan and cry, then to pull at the chains trying to escape then in a last ditch effort he begins to scream. Either in hopes that someone would hear him and come to his rescue or upon the realization that he is about to die. He knows that this is no joke, but he gives Montresor a chance at redemption by pretending that it is. Unfortunately whatever insult Fortunato had given, it leads to his demise. In the end all he can do is beg…

Looking closely at how Fortunato acts when Montresor is burning him slowly, shows that Fortunato does anything for attention. Since Montresor is his friend, he does not suspect anything strange at first. "He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation. I did not understand" (p. 3 li. 17-19). Fortunato has the tendency to need attention even though he did not understand Montresor when he mentioned harm to himself. It is clear from this situation that Fortunato is always wanted to be…

“The Cask of Amontillado” is a spectacular horror story by author Edgar Allan Poe, cleverly plotted and well crafted. In a prodigious show of mischief, Poe brings forth Fortunato, an epicure of superior wines, an enjoyer of festivities, and a very inebriated man. The night of Carnival, this jaunty fellow has lost all abstemiousness to the powerful grasp of intoxication. Perhaps had he not been so indulgent in his choice of vintage, he would have avoided falling prey to an even sorrier fate, namely, that which Mr. Poe chooses for him: “He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.”[1] Behold the attire he wears to the grave. In his bumbling ignorance, Fortunato is blind to his forthcoming quietus. Poe, a master puppeteer, leads his marionette further and further into…

An element of symbolism is expressed when the story turns its attention to Fortunato’s and Montresor’s clothes. “He [Fortunato] had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.” This symbolizes Fortunato’s foolishness in listening to Montresor, and ignoring the growing danger Montresor was leading him into. The symbolism also reveals how Montresor fools Fortunato into venturing deep in the catacombs by getting him drunk. In addition, Montresor uses Fortunato’s…

However, Montressor is not happy because he appears to be friends with Fortunato, he is happy because he knows that he will get his revenge on this day. Fortunato is dressed as a fool.
