The lens through which readers encounter monsters is often a skewed one. This lens could be that of the author, who seeks to embody a monster as a horrific, non-human entity that will cause havoc in an area. Similarly, this lens could be that of a character in a piece, one who witnesses the monster’s wrath and destruction firsthand and hopes to avoid the cruel savage being. Monster narratives rarely unfold from the perceptive of the monster, and, as such, audiences must rely on other sources as to the monster’s course of action. Such voices can carry a bias with them. As in the case of the author, the omniscient perspective provides descriptions of the monster without directly interacting the monster. This perspective could easily fail to report…

    Prince of Egypt

The story of The Prince of Egypt was very inspiring. It’s about the life of Moses. Long ago in Egypt, all new born male Hebrews are to be killed. In order to save Moses, his mother put him in a basket and the queen found him along the river. Moses grew up with his foster brother, Ramses. They were really close and living happy and wealthy. One day, Moses met his siblings. His sister insisted that Moses is her brother, and that he is a Hebrew. Of course Moses wouldn’t believe her, but she sang a lullaby that her mother sang when he was still a baby. He realized that he was really a Hebrew when he dreamt that same night. Looking at the Israelite slaves suffering, Moses killed an Egyptian. He didn’t really mean it, and went away ashamed and confused. In the dessert, he found a burning bush. It was God commanding him to save the Israelites from the Egyptians. So Moses went back to Egypt, and was welcomed by Ramses. Moses asked to free the Israelites, but that’s just one thing Ramses wouldn’t do. Moses then performed a miracle by turning his staff to a snake; but they were not impressed. Moses still tried to convince Ramses, and performed more miracles. Guided by God, Moses and the Israelites headed to Israel which was a sea away. God helped them by dividing the sea into half in order for them to pass. In Mount Sinai, God appeared and gave them the Ten Commandments. If people will follow it, they will be able to live in the promise land with Abraham as their father.…

    On Monsters

Many people perceive monsters as anything grotesque or not looking like the norm. In the book On Monsters, written by Asma, he mentions an array of monsters. He states, “One aspect of the monster concept seems to be the breakdown of intelligibility. An action or a person or a thing is monstrous when it can’t be processed by our rationality, and also when we cannot readily relate to the emotional range involved” (Asma 10). Because our perception is blinded by appearance, we fail to see the truth behind a monster –their actions. Although people define a monster by their appearance, it’s their actions that give them their identity.…

Werewolves are characterized as monsters according to Cohen’s “Seven Theses” and savages as stated in Wilson’s essay, “Civilized Vampires Versus Savage Werewolves”. Werewolves have shown a shift from being a scare to traditional cultural values to showing blatant sex appeal, embracing contemporary values. In The Wolf Man, Larry was cursed with the ability to transform into a werewolf because of his relationship with an engaged woman. In the Twilight Series, werewolves are openly embracing their sexuality rather than repressing it. Movies in the past have shown more death and destruction of werewolves as a result of continuously having to repress their sexual desires. They transform, only on nights of full moons, losing their humanity in the process. More modern films present a more confidently sexy werewolf. Their muscles are practically busting out of their shirts and their white smiles light up the room. Werewolves have soon a shift, along with our cultural values, from repressing their sexual will to openly expressing it.…
