Monologue From The Krauts
“Kreuzau-15 km,” I see on the sign as I’m walking down the road. I’ve been away from my Company for 4 days now. The last thing I remember is a Kraut firing a Panzerschreck at my fighting position. After that, everything just kind of went dark. My uniform is muddy, I haven’t slept in 2 days in fear of being caught by the Krauts. I haven’t eaten in 3 days; my stomach feels like it is wrenching together. I was finally able to eat today when I stole food from a German house. It almost seems as they believe they are winning the war, a picture of Hitler was on their wall. I wish they would just give up and stop fighting. No, snap out of it. You must survive. You must get back home to Ma and Pa, you have get back, so you can help Pa with the harvest. …show more content…
Where am I at? Oh yeah, I’m trying to get back to the Americans at Aachen. I am in the prickly bushes, I’m not sure how I fell asleep, but I at least feel rested. It looks like early morning; the singing birds give an eerie sense of calm to all of this chaos. I get up, I look down the road, no sounds besides the birds singing. I rub my eyes, ouch, I accidently have rubbed dirt in my eyes. I take some water out of my canteen and wash my eyes out. Nice cool water on an early cold morning day. It’s refreshing, but the sense of calm is smashed by the sound of a thundering mortar round crashing near me. I freeze up, but then start to relax when I realize it sounds like American artillery fire. The 1st Division is near, I can sense it. I finally get up and take my first few steps on the road. I hear gunfire maybe a kilometer out to the North. It sounds like German MG-42 fire. I cannot count the bullets coming out of the barrel. What are they shooting at? Americans, maybe their own citizens for being “Defeatist.” Who the hell knows, this war has dragged on for so many years. I feel it coming to a close, do the Germans know that …show more content…
I keep walking down this road though, right now, this is the only road that I know. I can hear the sound of American tanks, they have a different rumble than the German ones. I can feel myself starting to feel hope, the hope that I will be able to survive and get back to my Company. I haven’t thought about my family in two days. I have just thought about survival. Doing what I need to do to survive. I haven’t eaten in two days, I can feel my guts wrenching once more. I try and imagine my Ma making me a steak, I am trying to remember the taste of it. All I taste is the salt and dirt I’ve accumulated over the past few days. I snap back into reality. A shot rang out. I felt it wiz past my head. I start running. I am in between the lines of my fellow Americans, and on the other side, the

They boys in the Jungend are also enlisted soldiers who have to fight when it is needed. One day Erik is sent to fight in the war. While traveling to Russia he becomes acquainted with some other boys in his platoon named Oskar, Jakob, and Fassnacht. They get attacks by aircraft and very few of the Germans die but the boys are pretty scared. When they reach their destination they go into the trenches and prepare to fight. Their commander explains the plan and teaches them how to use certain equipment like mines and grenades. When the first waves of Russians attack it is mainly infantry foot soldiers. In the second wave the Germans start to drop and German hope looks lost. Erik is hit by a grenade and he is hurt. He is lying in pain in the bottom of a trench. With many dead bodies around him, he sees that playing dead won’t help because the Russians are stabbing every body they find with a bayonet. He knew he was running out of time. To his luck a tank broke down over him. He now has to think fast. He sees a dead Russian boy and puts on him uniform to disguise himself. He leaves the trench disguised as a Russian. Life in the trenches was not how I imagined it would be. Instead of marching gloriously into Germany with limited amount of difficulties, as the guy at the recruiting office and my friends had promised me, I found myself stuck in the same muddy, wet, uncomfortable ditch since I arrived in France. There were no cheers from grateful citizens, no parties in my honour and no prizes to be won. Only the endless tedium of trench life, with its muddy surrounding, unburied bodies and uniforms covered in lice.…

Fighting in this war is not what I thought it was going to be like. The trenches where fellow soldiers and I are located smell horrid. Bodies are rotting around us and the thick scent of them are filling the already unclean air. It feels like pain in my nose as I am writing this. I am watching men get killed left and right. Today the Germans used tons of lethal chlorine gas on us. We were up against it, it was terrible. We had to urinate on handkerchiefs to prevent the gas from filling our lungs and killing us. I survived somehow, but watching some of my comrades fail to survive really wasn’t bonzer.…

I was sitting with my family at the breakfast table drinking milk and eating a piece of burnt toast; that was when I heard the feint sound of sirens coming from the east end of the block. My dads face grew pale and my mother quickly stood up and grabbed my brother and mines hand. She guided us towards the back of the house through a small opening in the floor. Once we reached the hole, she took my brothers hand and placed it in mine, telling him to watch over me. We were put into the hole and she kissed our heads, then covered the little light we had with a rug. I started to panic, unaware of the destruction and persecution that lay before me on a silver platter. We spent a week in that ditch, although it had felt like a lifetime. All the while, I thought of my parents: where had they gone; would they soon return? One day while we were there, with cramps building up in my legs, I heard footsteps coming from above my head. My brother hoping it was our parents returning to save us from the forever darkness that we faced slid the rug over and peered up with squinting eyes. The rough man standing above us, however, was not our father, but a man I would soon come to know as, Nazi soldier. The reasons of our taking were not because of crime, but because of my ethnicity, the way I looked, the way I spoke, and even my religion.…

“And just when you think you’ve found the land of milk and honey, they grab ya by the britches, and haul you way up high … until you’re hauled up to the surface, flopping and gasping for breath! And then they cook ya, and then they eat ya—or worse!” speaks Mr. Krabs, advising Spongebob to do all in his power to avoid the horrors of man that lay waste at the top of the ocean. Spongebob, justifiably so in this manner, shows a grim expression of horror to Mr. Krab’s comments. He reflects deeply upon the crab’s comments, before asking, “what could be worse than that?”…

The next day woke me by the sound of gun fires and our men yelling waking us up. We grabbed our gear and hid behind the rough hills as a shield. It started, as frightened as I already was my friend had just got killed by the blazing bomb. I didn’t know how to feel about it in this rush of survival, so I ran as the next bomb was coming my way. But what could I do about it? I have to protect myself as well. I didn’t put my life at stake I was forced like all the other soldiers. My life is at risk and if I survive I will go home with proud survival guilt. As I had just lost focus of what was happening because I was so shocked thinking this is what war really is; a gun manages to pass through my arm as if I’m not weak already. I fall down to the ground with the scent of dirt southing (soft rustling) through my nose. A blurred vision of my troops fighting was the only other sense apart from the sound of air raid sirens and drones. I can’t believe no one has noticed me, they probably have but don’t…

Silence entered the air after I stepped out of my apartment complex. Slamming the door hard, I walked out of the building and started strutting down the sidewalk into town. Several arguments left the air after I stepped out into the cold, frosty morning of November in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My parents have been arguing for months now, and I can’t take it. I mean, they’re good parents and have given me a nice place and all, but they always are getting drunk and argue all the time. I’ve tried to leave home multiple times but I always end up winding back. I poked at my shaggy, greased blonde hair. I’m a labeled greaser and belong to Tim Shepard’s gang. I mean they’re fun and all, but sometimes I can’t stand them. They watch out for me, we’re buddies, but they’re always drunk and wound up in fights all the time. It’s just like at home, but with the gang I feel more like they’re not gonna leave me.…

I will not miss everyone yelling the words “Wanly” and “dying” in the same sentence. Since the war started, people cry everyday looking sad and empty, and big animals have been disappearing from the zoo. As an elephant and one of the biggest animals at the zoo, the zookeepers are going to kill me last. I know I am going to die and there is no way to get around doing so, simply because I heard soldiers at the zoo ordering the workers around. I wish I could be shot to stop the pain of waiting for the light to take me. My world is crumbling and I cannot help it. My friend John was starved to death when no other way worked to put him down, and now I’m next. Now I am destined to face the same fate as John and starve. He was an elephant just like…
