Tom Robinson is also a mockingbird, who, through trying to help a white lady, Mayella Ewell, sparks a great outrage in Maycomb County. He is wrongly accused of raping her, and blindly accused because of the racism in Maycomb. Many turn a blind eye towards his innocence, and don't have the courage to stand up for values. Tom Robinson is innocent and harmless human being, yet he is still victimized on so many levels. Since Tom is a black man, he never got a fair chance for anything, whether it is a small thing or a life-deciding trial. Also, the fact that he is living in Maycomb doesn’t exactly help him, considering that it was one of the most racist towns at that time. He also defends himself against a white man, which makes him hated even more. In Maycomb, whites are always superior, no matter how good the black man is, or how bad the white man is. In Atticus’ final words to the jury, he says,” […] confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption- the evil assumption – that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negroes are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with the minds of their caliber,” (207). That’s exactly what the jury does. They say Tom was guilty, simply because of their prejudice against race.…

He intentionally makes time to spend quality time with Scout and Jem, and he has a deep passion for the equality of the blacks. Being a lawyer, he was assigned a case to defend Tom Robinson, a gentle and kind slave, from an accusation of rape on a poor teenage girl. Atticus truly believed in Tom’s innocence, and diligently made his case for Tom’s freedom. When the jury determined Tom guilty, seemingly on a prejudice basis, and sent him to prison, Atticus still did not give up hope, “Not time to worry yet, Scout. We’ve got a good chance.” (293) Despite the odds, he still showed passion, and maintained a hopeful outlook on Tom’s…

Atticus Finch, the best lawyer in Maycomb, was sitting nervously in his chair as he waited for the town Judge to arrive in court. Tom Robinson, Atticus’ client was sitting next to him, equally angry as he was scared. “They can’t send me to jail, just because of rumors” he thought “ I really can’t, just because I’m colored don’t mean they can send me to jail, and now my lawyer is a white man and is nearly here for the pay out!” A snarled look came to his face. Atticus saw this gesture and shuddered in discouragement. Atticus was always a true believer in justice for all, feeling everyone should have a fair trial. He was one of the most loved lawyers in Maycomb, that is, before he sided with a black man, over a white. He honestly believed him when he said he didn’t do it. He looked at the townspeople and jury, anger and hatred for Tom and Atticus peered onto their faces. “ Calm” Atticus whispered “they’ll get their own soon Tom, but I know you didn’t do it, and I fought for your rights.” Tom smiled “It’s okay, Mr. Atticus, you did your best, maybe my children will grow up in a better, less racist place” Atticus saw the…

Robinson was a black man who was not accepted by the society. He was seen as a bad person just because he was black, especially after Mayella Ewell accused him of raping her though he was innocent. Tom was actually a really helpful caring person. "And so a quiet, respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity to 'feel sorry' for a white woman has had to put his word against two white people." Tom showed courage when he innocently agreed to enter Ewell’s house to help Mayella it was a dangerous thing for any black man in the 1930s to enter a white man's home without permission. Tom risked his life to help Mayella when he saw her incapable of doing one of her chores. No one had forced him to do such thing but he done it from the kindness of his heart knowing what would happen to him if he got caught. We learn that Tom is a very thoughtful, humble man who was just trying to give a hand but instead the judge took Mr. Ewell’s word over his and was convicted of raping Mayella. Tom signified purity, was an innocent, good-hearted, only do good…

Atticus, a white lawyer defending a black man, does not think that they can win the trial because there was no way you were going to get an all white jury to not convict a black man. Atticus even told his two kids, Jem and Scout that there was no way they would win the trial but there was no reason they couldn’t try to win. “‘Atticus, are we going to win it?’ ‘No, honey.’ ‘then why-’ ‘simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’ (p.76)”. In the end, Tom Robinson (the black man Atticus…

When Reverend Sykes, the minister at First Purchase M.E. African Church, sees them sitting in the courtroom and hoping that the judge will decide in favor of Tom, he tells them, “Now don’t you be so confident…. I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man” (238). Scout and Jem, however, do not lose hope. Having learned some valuable lessons from their father, the children refuse to give up. Scout strongly believes in the co-existence of good and evil in the world and prays that good will inch over evil for Tom Robinson. "Those are twelve reasonable men in everyday life, Tom's jury, but you saw something come between them and reason… There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads - they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life” (220). When Atticus verbalizes this, he emphasizes the fact that all good men are reasonable men, but evil in the occurrence of convicting Tom because of the color of his…

As made evident, it does make sense for Atticus to take a stand and defend Tom Robinson because of his belief in upholding and embodying the ethical precepts of the Golden Rule, understanding that his actions must reflect this in all aspects of his life, and his courage and integrity allowed him to set an example for his children, who looked upon his actions as a quintessence of an ethical person, both as their father and as a lawyer. Exemplified in the narrative that rivets itself on the choices we must all make in our lives, we as humans have the power to make decisions can advance and contribute to our society, and ones that can tarnish and impede its progress. Atticus proves that even when the odds are stacked against us, we must still make the choice that we believe is righteous, regardless of how difficult it may be. His actions, and the implications of his decisions, prove how choices motivated by morals and values can not only change the world around us, but reflect the type of person we really.…

He made plans to get Tom Robinson's sentence shortened, or even his sentence dropped. "He put his hand on his shoulder and whispered something to him." When Atticus does this, he is telling Tom about the final verdict of the case, and about their plans to make the appeal. Atticus was going to file for an appeal to a higher court, but Tom Robinson was shot, as he tried to escape prison. Because of Atticus' determination to make this appeal, and get Tom's sentence changed, he isn't seen as a failure, because of his determination to prove that Tom was…

"The evil assumption that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women.." said Atticus. Tom committed no crime, but his only crime was the fact that he was born with the dark tone of his skin colour, which to the eyes of society was a punishable offence. "And so a quiet, respectable, humble Negro who had the unmitigated temerity 'to feel sorry' for a white women had had to put his words against two white people", Atticus dictated the only crime Tom committed. Just like the words of Atticus, Tom was only guilty of showing kindness and pity towards the lonely Mayella, but his thoughtful actions were returned with only hatred. Everybody inside the court room during the trial was shown of Tom's innocence by Atticus, but they turned a blind eye and kept silent. Atticus explained this fact to Jem, "Tom Robinson's a coloured man, Jem. No jury in this part of the world's going to say ' we think you're guilty but not very' on a charge like that." Tom was the victim of the cruel biased thoughts of a white society and he knew the outcome of the trial before it even began.…
