Does technology make students smarter or more distracted?
For many, it brings as many problems as benefits
June 7, 2011|By Scott Travis, Sun Sentinel
On just about any college campus, students walk with their heads down and fingers on their phones — staying connected and learning, they say.
Their iPhones and Droids help them to do research, record lectures and photograph lab samples. For younger children, technology such as animation, games and videos help improve reading and vocabulary by bringing subjects to life, said Richard Gentry, a childhood literacy educator and author in Fort Lauderdale.

The Advantages of High-Tech Gadgets
By Matthew Schieltz, eHow Contributor
High-tech gadgets and devices exist in almost every industry. Medical industries use software to treat some tumors, business sectors use PDAs and small payment processors to enhance work productivity, and digital reading devices such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony E-Reader allow individuals to read on-demand books and literature. The sticker price of high-tech gadgets is usually high, but gadget owners have the convenience to use these types of devices just about anywhere.

1. Mobility * The majority of high-tech gadgets are extremely mobile and portable; this gives the owner the chance to use it at any time and any place. Consider netbooks that weigh an average of 2 to 3 lbs., and fit conveniently into small carrying cases or backpacks. High-tech gadgets that use GPS (global positioning system) technology are the ultimate mobile devices, which allow individuals to see and plan travel routes instantly. Wristwatches have also come a long way with high-tech features. Stanley/Brando manufactures a watch with a built-in LED flashlight, while Fossil produces a high-tech watch with a built-in Palm Operating System and a touch screen. All of these mobile, high-tech gadgets allow for convenience.
Capabilities
* There are lots of high-tech gadgets that contain multiple capabilities. Gadget owners can use just one or two devices to handle many tasks. For example, PDAs (personal digital assistants), some mp3 players and other similar smartphone devices use mobile operating systems and user interfaces to allow for Internet surfing, voice communications and task scheduling. In many of these high-tech devices, wireless technology--a protocol that provides instant connectivity and communications--gets built into laptop computers, mobile PDAs, cell phones, and e-readers like the Amazon Kindle. * Sponsored Links * EliteAAA-Radius&Diameter

Employees connect to the office from a home computer with secure VPN (virtual private networking) technology. Some sales people use PDAs, mobile computers and other high-tech devices to submit work orders and contact business associates. Sales transactions can even be instantly completed with the use of convenient devices like the Square--a mobile credit card reader just about 1 inch long that connects to most mobile devices. Business professionals and college students are two consumer groups that use high-tech gadgets to finish projects and collaborate with others through mobile technologies while at home, in the dorm or at the office.
Innovation
* High-tech gadgets pave the way for new devices to be produced. Computer processors are made faster with the use of two, three and four CPUs (central processing units) to enhance efficiency and speed. Technology companies and inventors continually research and find ways to tweak current high-tech gadgets in order to make processing more efficient, and expand the capabilities of consumer and business products.

The Disadvantages of Gadgets on Students
By Kate Coen, eHow Contributor
The Facebook generation uses many gadgets every day.
Modern technologies like television and computers provide identifiable educational advantages, such as greater access to information and more compelling presentations of that information. Over-use of technology, though, especially such gadgets as cell phones, iPods and video games, presents a whole range of problems which may interfere with a student's ability to learn and attend to lessons.

1. Social Networking * Students who use their computers or cell phones to participate in social networking sites may post material considered inappropriate by school authorities. They may also develop an unfavorable reputation based on those pictures or comments. Pictures of misbehavior can adversely affect their chances of getting into the university of their choice or of getting a job.
Addictions
* It is easy to become addicted to gaming, texting, talking on the phone or socializing online. Some students may attempt to do this in class, which disrupts their learning, and at home it detracts from study time. Kids putting in long hours on their gadgets will give less attention to assignments and may be irritable when they are away from their gadgets. They might also sleep less, which can slow down their thinking the next day. * Sponsored Links * CYS Rapid Prototype
Product design and development Free Conceptual Design.Call Today! cys-sg.blogspot.com Creativity * In the past, children and young people filled up their free time by reading books, socializing, or engaging in active, creative play. A fixation on gadgets reduces participation in of all these, especially the aspect of creativity. Digital worlds can be vast, but they are always structured, not requiring the imagination and inventiveness of unstructured play. Some children become less creative and less able to entertain themselves.
Health
* Persistent use of high-tech gadgetry can lead to a slew of health problems for young and old alike. A sedentary lifestyle discourages exercise and encourages obesity. The back-lit screens used for computers, iPhones and video games can cause eye problems. Walking around everywhere with music blaring directly into your ears brings on headaches and hearing difficulties. The net effect of all these things, plus the pressure of immediate responses to everything, can become stressful.
Your Brain * In The Mail Online, neurologist Susan Greenfield says that technology use changes our brains and not always for the better. Just thinking about doing something --- such as performing an action in a video game --- affects your brain nearly as strongly as actually doing it. There is circumstantial evidence linking a rise in Attention Deficit Disorder with increased use of video games, causing many scientists to worry that children may do permanent harm to their brains by spending too much time interacting with such gadgets.

I’ve realized technology is very helpful now days but in the classrooms it’s more distracting than anything else. As Michael J. Bugeja stated in “Facing the Facebook”, Academics assessing learning outcomes often discover that technology is as much a distraction in the classroom as a tool. I catch myself checking my phone in class every now and then but when I do I miss out on what the instructor is teaching. Technology is a great tool for us to learn and gather information but when you put technology in the classroom it becomes more distracting than helpful.…

The internet is a great and expansive place, and that is why sometimes students rather explore it then listen to their teachers. All these sites and apps are taking up the attention of students throughout the world. This is shown in a Canadian study which proves that computers are helping lower the users grade and his or hers classmates as well. The experiment showed that students who were using computers during the lecture had lower grades than those who were using pen and paper. The worst part is that students around the computer user were also affected and they too had lower grades. A professor at NYU said that “screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke.” He teaches Media Studies and was an advocate for the use of technology during class. The tipping point for him was when he realized that the distractions spread. He no longer allows the use of technological devices unless the assignment requires it. He also stated that when technology was removed from the…

In the classroom, computers allow students to learn through exploring the internet and doing research. Looking up information and researching papers with this resource can keep students more interest in a project and learning more than they would with a textbook. New technology can make students have a low attention span which makes them become more interested in their phone than what is going on in class. This is not always possible though because the newest and best technology is often very expensive and schools cannot always afford to get new computers every couple years.…

No one can deny that cell phones distract students to do their homework or focus in class. Teenagers mostly use their cell phones to text or call their friends and family, but the problem with that is that they do it while they are doing their homework, during class or while studying for an exam and that is not letting them concentrate. People are using their cellphones because cell phones provide immediate access, regardless of time and location, eliminate the need to find a landline phone, and make them look good. Wei and Lo also demonstrated similar motives: information seeking, social utility, affection, fashion and status, mobility, and accessibility. (Jin and Park 612) However, teenagers now a days are more involved in using cell phones to text and call their family and friends but they do it at the wrong time when they are suppose to be listening to their teachers or…
