Winslow Homer
Art always play a crucial part in my life. However, before I entered middle school, I barely draw and I barely have the inspiration for art. The reason I changed my view for art is related to an famous artist named Winslow Homer.

Standing alone among the American painters of the late 1800s, having a little academic training, and remaining largely untouched by the innovations of the French impressionists of his era, Winslow Homer subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. His unique style draws my attention when I was watching his painting in an art museum. Those paintings he drew are realistic and dramatically show the circumstances in the pictures. His origin of those original ideal give me inspiration of creating the art and eventually strength my interests toward art. Moreover, I was hesitated to make art before I saw Homer’s works because I used to believe that only people who take the formal class and earn academic credit could make great art. However, after I knew that Homer created the art without pursuing recognition in that stuffy academic world, I am more confident about the art piece I made.

He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations. Homer practiced a vast amount of art style so that he could find the one which is most suitable for him. And based on the style he preferred, Homer generated a host of novel ideas.

In order to exhibit his or her works in the public, the painters, had to submit to the juries, a panel of people, usually a group of old conservatives. Winslow homer neither sought nor gained recognition in the academic group. Ironically, it were those conservatives who stifle other painters’ intellects, dampen their potentials as artists, and make Homer become famous among painters due to

“When the artist is alive in any person... he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creature. He becomes interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and he opens ways for better understanding and seeing.” Robert Henri, an American painter and teacher, expresses this statement in his book, ‘The Art Spirit’ (1939). He provides us with a subjective context that requires thoughtful reflection. In his statement, the person does not have to be a painter or sculptor to be an artist; they look beyond this simplicity and embrace the creature inside by becoming inventive, searching, daring and self-expressing in the way they use media. Viewers are lured towards their works and their attention is captured. Gordon Bennett, an Australian Aboriginal artist, demonstrates this theory through his work. Possession Island (Appendix 1), 1991 and Notes to Basquiat (Jackson Pollock and his Other) (Appendix 2), 2001, will be discussed in relation to Henri’s statement.…

Norman Rockwell was an artist in the mid 20th century who was famous for his illustrations on the front cover of The Saturday Evening Post where he displayed his ability to create for almost 50 years. Although he was a more than talented artist he described himself as an illustrator more than an artist. Rockwell would have agreed with Clive Bell who argued there was a difference between art and illustration. Rockwell was right in containing himself to illustration due to his style, incentives, and the tone of his works but Rockwell still deserves every ounce of credit due because of his elaborate, insightful, and self aware pieces.…
