Mister Pip
The story ‘’Mister Pip’’ unfolds as it introduces Matilda, a young bouvilligan teenage girl who develops a trusting relationship with the islands only white man, Mr Watts – known as Pop eye to the villagers, who willingly puts himself forward to be Matilda and her class mates teacher, as all the other people had escaped from the island in time for missing the blockade, along with Matildas father. The two minor characters I am going to explore is Dolores, Matildas mother, and Joseph, Matildas father. Through the story the war runs parallel to Matilda’s education. It is based in the late 20th century on a small uncared for island in the Pacific Ocean. At the beginning of the novel Matilda’s fathers whereabouts is explained with confusion. He is only spoken through the voices of the characters within the novel, but is later on then introduced towards the end of the story. Seeming as Matilda hasn’t seen her dad for a few years, there is a lot of questions about him from Matilda, most of which are answered within Matilda’s thoughts. Matilda’s mother has bought Matilda up on her own since Matilda was 11. ‘’When I was eleven, my father flew off in a mining plane’’ Therefore, she is very impassive and protective over Matilda and the way in which she is bought up and the certain things she gets introduced too in her child hood. Dolores has overzealous beliefs in Christianity, which in some ways made Matilda distance herself which then results to her lying and hiding stuff from her mother.
Dolores is a central character of the novel in as much as she typifies the high moral ground of the fundamentalist Christians of the village. She is spirited and will not give way in an argument even if she may be losing it. She has a frightening authority when she visits the classroom. We know Dolores is angry because of the green scarf she wears like a bandanna. The very first page of the novel grasps our attention with its vivid colour and its quick delineation of a character. Matilda is also a good girl. She never disobeys her mother or walks around like, as people would put it back then, a whore. A dress that goes down to her feet and to her wrists is her daily outfit. Because of this, the boy she has her eye on, Nathaniel Benson, starts to flirt with her, saying “The day is mine, so I’m going fishing. Want to come?” (31). Matilda did not have to act out in such a way that she is looked down upon and has caught the eye of the…

The bus driver for the town of Sam Dent, Dolores Driscoll, seems very nice and caring, but there are definitely many examples throughout the first chapter that show her to be quite goofy. First of all, a lot of the things she says and the phrases that she uses are very out there and do not seem to make a whole lot of sense. In the second paragraph on page eleven Dolores says, “Doreen was a Pomeroy from Lake Placid, a sweet little ding-a-ling of a girl”. On page 31 paragraph two Dolores also says, “...and it scared the bejesus out of me, although I could not for the life of me tell you why”. These two sentences make her seem a little loony because the things she says are so unique, and even I rarely ever her people use those phrases. This is just one example of how the author portrays Dolores to be just a bit nutty.…

For my research report, I have chosen to research the evolution of society’s fashion on the adolescent girl. Through the rising of hemlines and revealing garments, to discover how it has impacted on forming an adolescent girl’s own self of identity. I believe fashion is an everyday movement and an express of art; a way of showing your feeling and emotions without a sense of smile or frown.…

Despite suffering through a number of unfavourable events, it is her mother’s death that triggers her inability to feel: “I do not know what you are supposed to do with memories like these. It feels wrong to want to forget. Perhaps this is why we write these things down, so we can move on” (Jones 179); through writing about these events in chronological order, Matilda is able to begin the healing process of her mental wounds and continue to capitalize on her true identity. Ironically, it is following this barbarous event that Matilda comes to recognize the beauty in Bougainville Island: “All the lovely things in the world came into view—the gleaming sea, the sky, the trembling green palms” (Jones 148). It seems as if this loss had brought clarity to Matilda’s life as she begins to disconnect herself from the island she once referred to as “home”, and makes the immense expedition to Australia and England. This exemplifies the idea that in order for someone to rise, another individual must die. Matilda’s happiness and search for her inner identity is dependent upon Dolores and Mr. Watts giving up their utmost basic human right: life (Robbins, 2007). Although it is a tragic situation, this event highlights Matilda’s inner strength. Despite losing the will to live, she rides out the storm and turns to writing about the unfortunate event. As a result of these tragic circumstances, Matilda makes a name for herself as she analyzes and scrutinizes every detail of her life through means of writing whilst simultaneously keeping Mr. Watts’ and her mother’s memory alive. By doing so, Matilda is able to accomplish her dream of working in the education…

    Mr Watts Quotes

Mr. Watts is a liar whose life is based on half truths. He transforms from ‘Pop Eye’ to an influential teacher and to Matilda and the children on the island, he is a knowledgeable, superior man who brings energy to them. Portrayal is arguably reflective of the structure of the narrative and Lloyd Jones has chosen to tell ‘Mister Pip’ through the eyes of a young, depressed Matilda. Furthermore we receive a biased view on life on the island, which is coming from someone who has possibly suffered from post-traumatic stress. The character of Matilda is essentially a device used by Jones which demonstrates how memories are untrustworthy and distorted because she is an innocent child who chooses to filter her memories. Also she is a going through puberty so would not necessarily remember some are of things that are happening to her. Jones chooses to base the novel on the island of Bougainville as it is a remote part of the world which is isolated. This allows him to make things up as people are not likely to know what happens there.…

Mr. Watts or “ Pop Eye” as the children call him, is the only remaining white man on the island and he volunteers to teach the village children. He reads Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations to the children, who are fascinated by it. Matilda is especially engrossed by it and by the story of the white boy “Pip” whose story is a lot like hers. However, Matilda’s mother has never been outside the island that they live on. She knows little to nothing about the outside word and would rather not know about it; since her husband was taken by the white men. She believes in traditional ideas, holding her ancestry and God very dear to her. Matilda and Dolores become emotionally separated as a result of the moral confusion they both are faced with. The differences are overcome however when the time comes to stand up for the other, the bond of unconditional love conquers all. Matilda and Dolores, although forever physically separated, become emotionally reunited.…

“To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life,” (W. Somerset Maugham). This quote illustrates a main theme in Lloyd Jones’ Mister Pip, the influence of literature. Mister Pip is set in the Solomon Island of Bougainville, during the 1990s, when the island was at war with its government. The protagonist, thirteen year old, Matilda Laimo, lives with her mother, Dolores, and teacher, Mr. Watts. Through Mr. Watts’ reading of Great Expectations, Matilda escapes the poor conditions of the island.…

The characters in Matilda are an important demonstration why literacy is important in a child’s life. Matilda’s parents do not find literacy as an important factor in a child’s life they rather focus on television and game shows to get their education. This is a problem because it teaches her that literacy and education are not important. Through Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood it is easily seen as the causes of a lack of education and literacy; not doing much in life…
