Mistakes In Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why
A high school girl, new to the town and new to the school, commits suicide because of the things others have done to her. She made tapes with the people who lead her to end her life. Hannah was a freshman at a new school and a new town, she wanted to use that to her advantage but then rumors started. She recorded seven cassette tapes with thirteen people on them, they were the people who lead to her suicide. The rumors tie in to a theme of the novel, rumors are almost impossible to disprove. Hannah uses the tapes to justify committing suicide and the people on the tapes did unreasonable things that lead to her actions. In the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, the setting and point of view affect the themes.

Hannah new to the town in the setting and no one knows her. At the beginning of the novel Hannah explains her new home, “ I was just cautious. New town. New school. And this time, I was going to be in control of how people saw me”, (Asher 11). To explain Hannah was new to a small town and she does not know anyone. She wants to use this setting to her advantage and have people see her in a certain way. She is cautious about her actions in the beginning. Furthermore, Hannah sees this new town as a fresh start. She wants to take control of her reputation. Hannah has her first kiss and the boy starts rumors about her being easy and slutty. Hannah tries to stop the rumors and save her reputation. It is hard to disprove the rumors without some friends to count on to back her up. After the rumors start, Hannah talks about a list going around her new school and she was voted on the hot side with the best ass in freshman class, “ i tilted my head so I could read the upside down title of the paper: FRESHMAN CLASS- WHO’S HOT/ WHO’S NOT”,(Asher 39). …show more content…
She uses that to justify her suicide. Hannah explains “I hope you’re ready, because i’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically why I ended it. And if you’re listening to these tapes, you’re one of the reasons why”, (Asher 7). In like manner, Hannah is telling anyone listening to the tapes that they are one of the reasons she ended her life. That is Hannah’s way of justifies her suicide. Significantly, if Hannah had not sent out the tapes then the reader cannot see how it could be justifiable, although there would be no novel without her sending out the tapes. She uses the tapes to explain and justify why she ended her life. As can be seen, Hannah ended her life because from her point of view the people on the tapes had done her wrong and she thinks there is no other way to get out of the life she is living. She makes the tapes and sends them to the people on it them to show them what they did to her to make her end her

    The movie shapes Hannah to look like she was around 16 to 18 years old. Despite this, Hannah and her parents, do not have Aaron (a.k.a Ron Ron) with them in the movie. Without Ron Ron this throws off the whole plot. To elaborate further about the book, Aaron found the piece of cloth and hid it in the dirty laundry. To illustrate, Aaron had to read in front of the whole group. Now without him, they just have a normal Seder with three children and not four. When Aunt Eva chose Hannah to open the door, that is the same for both, but when Hannah opened the door, she walked down the hallway it took a different way of getting to the small village in 1942. Whereas, in the book Hannah opens the door and she is already there in the village, listening to Shmuel singing and working out in the field, and Gitl cleaning dishes and making some sort of food. Speaking of Shmuel and Gitl, there was a Shmuel, but no Gitl in the movie. Also Shmuel looked a lot younger than I thought he was, but I think that is just because Hannah looks a lot older than she should have in the book.     Many of the concepts relate to psychology, and the fact that these kids are in the stage of adolescence. First off, one of the main concepts that I saw in this movie is that all of the kids showed the use of “false selves.” This is where an adolescent tell lies about themselves that they want people to believe so they think better of themselves, because “the other kids will never find out.” They lie a lot about their background and many other things such as their virginities which is a major thing in younger kids’ lives that decides whether they are a “prude” or a “slut.” Another concept that I saw, is the influence of peer pressure.     The characters who are in Thirteen Reasons Why are motivated by several factors that affect their lives in significant ways. Hannah Baker is the main character who is in this novel, which is based on the ‘thirteen reasons why she decided to end her own life. Hannah is motivated or driven by the resentfulness and stress that the actions of thirteen different individuals have caused in her life. Hannah records her own voice on cassette tapes to tell the thirteen people why she feels that they played a role in her decision, which also affects their lives too.
