We learn that while Randy did everything in his power to achieve all of his childhood dreams, not everything was accomplished. We learn the power of failing and how that can also help achieve your dreams. We learn that sometimes your dreams do not come true but may lead you to something you may not have realized you wanted in the first place. The theme of his lecture was about how having childhood dreams and the road to achieve these dreams may be blocked by “brick walls” (cmu.edu) but teaches that “brick walls are there for a reason, they let us prove how badly we want things”. (cmu.edu) That is one of many inspirational quotes given by Randy in his 75 minute lecture.…

I learned that if I want to go anywhere in life I need to push myself to my limits. I also learned that many successful people have a lot of grit. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and many others have grit as well as strong, powerful athletes like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Many people who were once unsuccessful and were put down, pulled themselves…

As a seventeen year old teenager it is not easy to write about success especially to a future child. My values and beliefs may change in the process of growing up – however I will try to honestly and truthfully describe my idea of being successful in life. I am convinced that first step to personal success takes place in your thought. It is important to believe in yourself and decide what important things that you desire are. My mom was determined to put a writing on the wall in my room that spells “go confidentially in the direction of your dreams”. She says that only limits to your dreams are those that you place in your mind. The more I think about it the more I agree. When I look at myself in the mirror I realise that the person staring back at me is the only person responsible for my personal success. I need to figure out my desires and learn to visualize them and work hard on developing plans how to achieve my desires. I have to fill my mind with positive thoughts and give my self-affirmation. This sounds very easy but let me tell you something my child, it is very complicated. Especially for a seventeen year old who changes his mind about everything quite…

Advice for a Ten Year Old

Further, some of life's best lessons are learned from one's failures. I remember being ten years old when I experienced my first big competitive event on my jump rope team. I was with my sister and best friend and we had prepared for weeks for this event. In spite of perfect practices, we were humiliated by our poor performance and ran off the floor yelling at each other and crying. I never wanted to jump rope again! My parents chased after us to console us, but also to insist that we finish the competition. I felt like a failure, but in retrospect it was a good lesson in accepting disappointment. I was inspired to practice even more for the next competition, and eventually went on to win a world championship.…

Life isn’t always easy and certainly not perfect. Ever day is a obstacle, a new challenge, a trial that tests our morals, abilities, and patients. A quote I’ve learned to live every day by is said by the great Helen Keller. “Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.” I’ve learned to stay strong in every situation I’m put into, when necessary. Past experiences and challenges have shaped my ability to perform different tasks and to value opportunities and education that is given to me.…

Like all children, when I was growing up all I ever wanted to do was to be big. I always kept a close eye on my role models (my parents) and always tried to do anything they did. The skills I learn and the attitude I acquired from a young age would be of immense help to me in my later years.…

As the only girl and the eldest in the family and a stereotyped achiever since childhood, there were a lot of expectations from me. Being the eldest isn’t that easy. You have no ‘ate’ or ‘kuya’ to rely on and you have to handle a lot of pressure at times in school and at home. I always thought an eldest needed to be very careful with her words and actions as people expect you to be flawless. You have to perform well in all the activities given, always give your best and be competitive because that is what’s expected. I thought I was born to comply with what everyone wanted. In short, I have to please everyone almost at all times. And because of that, I have come to believe that I can stand all by myself and live only for the awards. So I missed out the chance to enjoy life with the people around me; to experience a life other than academics and competitions.…

“Never be overconfident when you are successful in life, be always humble because success comes with a lot of responsibilities” Once my father told. I thought about that. I passed examinations; I got appreciation from teachers, but what responsibility came with that? It was a bit difficult question for me. Once my teacher told, “You are supposed to be a model for students”. That day I realized that I am being watched and observed by other students in my class.…
