Mindless Eating Strategy
The mindless eating strategy is an interesting concept. I do believe adapting to this mental approach would help control my weight. I feel I do a significant amount of mindless eating. Sometimes I eat food for no other reason than it just being there. I eat when I am stressed, lonely, or bored.

I do believe becoming more aware of my eating habits would greatly help me control my weight. In a summary I found of Wansink's Mindless Eating done by the Gettysburg College (2012), it is suggested to go from mindless eating to better mindless eating. Some of these strategies include eating less and portions sizes. This concept proposes to think 20 percent more or less; when fixing your plate put 20 percent less than what you think you might want

    One way in which eating behaviour is controlled is by a process called homeostasis. This involves mechanisms which both detect the state of the internal environment and also correct the situation to restore that environment to its optimal state. The body has evolved two separate systems, one for turning eating on and another for turning it off. Glucose levels play an important role in producing feelings of hunger. When there is a decrease in blood glucose, this increases the feeling of hunger which is activated by the lateral hypothalamus in the brain. This contains a neurotransmitter called the neuropeptide Y which causes the individual to consume food, therefore resulting in the glucose levels to rise again. This rise in glucose levels activates the ventromedial hypothalamus which leads to feelings of satiation. The ventromedial hypothalamus contains an area called the paraventricular nucleus which is believed to cause a condition called hyperphagia (over eating). This is turn inhibits further consumption until the blood glucose levels have decreased again.…

    The restraint theory (Herman and Mack) suggests that restraining our food intake actually increases the risk of overeating, which is why many diets fail and some people even end up putting more weight on. Herman and Polivy (1984) developed the boundary model to explain this.     The great thing about approaching dieting this way is not necessarily having to eat less. Of course, you will still have to eat the right kind of foods, so do watch what you eat. One thing about traditional dieting is how the whole body goes into survival mode to preserve whatever calories and fat it has. This is especially true if you skip one or two meals.     Over the course of this week I have learned many things about my eating habits. I found that when I am very busy I tend to eat less and healthier. When I am just sitting around I tend to eat more than necessary and the foods are not as good for me. Using this tracker has really helped me to see what I am consuming, as far as carbohydrates, fats, sugars, proteins, sodium, and total calories. I have also been able to tell that the more active I am the more calories that I burn in a day. Before I started using the tracker I never gave much thought to how many calories I was burning just walking around, cleaning, cooking, and working. My eating habits are not the greatest. This week I went to the beach for a couple of days and my eating habits while we were driving to and from Delaware was horrible. I ate fast food and consumed way to much sodium and sugars. When we were cooking for ourselves and walking around all day my numbers were much better. I did notice using this tracker though that I need to eat more vegetables and proteins, and cut back on my sugars. I have a hard time staying under my daily sugar allotment.     So how might one exercise free will while eating? The answer is quite simple and portion control is a good place to start. If you are someone who is struggling with your weight challenge yourself to eat less. Research shows that people unintentionally consume more calories when served larger portions (WHO) which can lead to excess calorie intake.     Obesity isn’t classified as an eating problem anymore. It is more than that a person’s biology plays a big roll. Cells and hormones play a big roll on how big you are and how your body regulates energy. Food equals energy and the body stores that energy in fat cells and uses the energy as needed. The metabolism breaks down that food and uses the energy generated from that food for everyday activities such as walking, talking, thinking. The faster ones metabolism is the more efficient they are at breaking down food and using the energy. The slower the metabolism the more energy gets stored and gets turned into fat cells and not used. The hormone leptin, which is produced in fat cells, sends signals to the brain telling it that its levels are dropping which means the cells are reducing. When this occurs the brain processes that information as starvation and sends signals back to slow down the metabolism and store as much energy as possible. There are people who eat less than other but still gain weight. That’s a biological problem. There are areas in the brain research has found that if damaged can lead to obesity. One such area is the ventromedial hypothalamus and the surrounding axons. If this area in the brain is damaged at then this can lead to overeating and more storing of fat cells. Research conducted on rats at the University of Nebraska looked at this area in the brain and how it affects food intake and body weight. With damage to that area the rat nearly tripled in size in the cores of about sixty days. Food intake does not always correspond to body weight. It is possible to excessively eat and not gain weight. It just matters how active one is and how efficient the metabolism is. There are other areas in the brain located in the prefrontal cortex that also can affect body weight.
