Millbrae Art and Wine Festival
The Millbrae Art and Wine Festival is an annual Labor Day weekend festival that takes place on Broadway street in a small town thirty minutes away from San Francisco. The Millbrae Chamber of Commerce decided to organize the first festival in 1970 because they believed that the festival revenue could save the chamber office from having to shut down due to insufficient government funding. Since then, the Millbrae Art and Wine Festival has become the most important tradition in this community. Today, the festival celebrates the end of the summer and Labor Day with live music performances, arts and crafts from hundreds of artists, large variety of food and drinks, classic car shows, and carnival games. People in the community lost interest in the festival for reasons such as they believe that the festival is the same each year, they are too busy at work, or they are unwilling to take times away from the internet. I believe that people should help maintain this tradition by attending or becoming a part of the festival because the it can foster stronger relationships between people in the community and create unique learning opportunities for children.
First of all, the Millbrae Art and Wine festival creates a valuable opportunity for people in the community to bond with each other. According to the article “MLA Should Bring Back Tradition”, the author Jeff Schudel argues that voting by filling out paper ballet instead of using electronics create an opportunity for communication, possibly about who to vote for, with the person sitting next to you. Similar to the tradition of voting with paper ballot, attending the festival also allows people in community to reconnect with neighbors and friends that they rarely have the chance to interact with in their busy daily life because when they see each other in the festival, they are likely to stop and make …show more content…
Children can get involved in the festival by joining the cleanup team with their parents or help staff a school club booth. In my freshmen year, I volunteered at a booth that sold bottle juices with other members of my high school’s Red Cross Club. Through creating a plan for selling the juice and taking turns doing tasks such as performing bottle dance, refilling ice, and drinks, and greeting customers, I learned that expressing my thought to other members is as important as being a good listener and following orders in team work. In order to become a better team player in the future, I realized that I must overcome my language barrier and have the courage to share my opinions. Aside from collaboration skill, children can learn from the picking up trash on the street after the festival that cleaning up after other people is difficult and therefore they take responsibility for their actions in life to avoid troubling other people. The festival can also provide children with unique and enjoyable experiences such as trying new food and games and meeting new people in the community that they cannot gain from school and home.
