Research has shown us that veteran and military student support programs on college campuses are vital for academic success and degree completion. These programs support this specific student population in other areas including career advising, mental health advising, and peer-to-peer networking. To understand how we can continue to develop programs and services to support these students, it is critical that we first explore some historical context to understand the development of support programs.     In her article Sørensen writes that “…veterans have all experienced and come to appreciate the confidence, loyalty, solidarity, and support that the collective offers. This can be seen when a group of veterans support their fellow Corporal after they return home and find that his wife had abandoned him. This support from a group of veterans shows that the comradery created from being in a war together can be very important for times when veterans cannot connect with society or their loved ones.
