Military Hair Cut and Uniform Regulations
The requirement for hair grooming standards is necessary to maintain uniformity within a military population. AR 670-1 states that many hairstyles are acceptable as long as the soldier maintains a neat and conservative appearance. I broke this regulation on Saturday, January 25, 2014 when I did not uphold this regulation. My hair was touching my ears, therefore, being out of regulation. The hair and grooming regulation, AR 670-1 was put in place to maintain the appearance and discipline of soldiers. The upkeep of a haircut and a shaved face is a professional look and is important to maintain because people such as civilians look to the Army to be a professional organization. It teaches the soldier to be disciplined by having the soldier have the integrity and responsibility to decide when he needs to get a haircut. This also gives the soldier the chance to show his first line supervisor, as well as the soldier's squad leader and other soldiers in his unit that he doesn't need to be told to shave and get a haircut. It shows that the soldier has the integrity to decide when he needs a haircut. Now, when approached by my first line supervisor about my hair, I failed to go to parade rest and face him. Disrespect to a Non-Commissioned Officer of the United States Army is totally and completely unacceptable. NCO's are the leaders of the Army, and should be treated with respect as such. NCO's are your leaders that are going to provide the soldier with the knowledge of soldier skills and provide the soldier with the skills applicable to his job. Disrespect has no place in the work place, but especially towards NCO's. Disrespect towards NCO's should not and will not be tolerated. Disrespect can be perceived from many different actions such as the rolling of a soldier's eyes to cursing an NCO out. However, disrespect can result in many different repercussions such as a smoking, a counseling, and the NCO can even go as far as recommending the soldier for an article 15,

    Marine Corps grooming standards are in place to conform Marines to a singular uniform look. They keep us from being too eccentric and while in Garrison they help us to keep a professional look about us at all times. They keep us from just “looking like everyone else,” and help us to stay a cut above the rest. The hair cut regulations are stated as an even fade from 0 to no more than 3” on the top of the head as long as the hair doesn’t interfere with any uniform article. There can be no eccentric designs or anything shaved into one’s head. For females the hair must be wrapped in a tight bun in the center of the back of the head not to exceed 3 inches from the scalp and be no wider than the width of one’s head. Females can wear bangs but they can’t fall into the line of sight and can’t affect the wearing of any headgear. For both male and female bleaches tints dyes are authorized as long as they give a natural appearance. No Marine will be required to shave his chest hair but it cannot protrude from the skivvy shirt collar or while in khakis. Marines must have a clean shave with the exception of a mustache which may not extend past the corners of the lips and must remain within the margin of the upper lip. Mustache hair when fully extended my not extend past half of an inch. Marines are allowed to have sideburns but they may not extend past the top of the upper orifice of the ear and may be no longer than one eighth of an inch. Hair may not be shaped in a “horse-shoe” on the head and no Mohawks are authorized. No Marine shall be required to shave their head with the exception of at basic training. Finger nails must be kept clean and may not interfere with regular duties; they may not extend past the finger tips either. Marines may not excessively pluck or remove eyebrows unless for a medical reason as prescribed by a doctor. All Marines are held to this even members of the Marine Corps reserve although reservists are authorized to wear wigs…

Which (referring to Army Regulation 670-1) means the hair on top of the head must be neatly groomed. The length and bulk of the hair may not be excessive or present a ragged, unkempt, or extreme appearance. The hair must present a tapered appearance. The hair will not fall over the ears or eyebrows, or touch the collar, except for the closely cut hair at the back of the neck. A soldier is a professional and an expert at all times, Because of this his uniform haircut and general hygiene is held to a professional standard. AR 670-1 is the ruling of this standard in which every soldier must uphold to. A soldier is measured by his/her ability to do his job successfully, tactfully, and professionally. The key to doing a job as a professional is a professional appearance, none know this as much as the Army. In the Army, the regulation that dictates what to look like while on duty is the AR 670-1; this provides an SOP on what to wear and how to groom for both males and females alike. When a job is done for the Army, the soldier is responsible to uphold the Army standards and is challenged to excel in his duties and a substandard looking soldier will never excel in the aforementioned. I’ll start off the main part of the essay by saying that a good portion of what is written in this essay is knowledge from AR 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia. A male soldier is responsible for keeping his hair in regulation, that is no longer than 4 inches and off the collar and ears, his facial hair is also subjected stating that unless on profile from and Army Physician, the soldier is responsible for having a clean shave every morning and every day for the duration of his career. Failure to do so is grounds for either a warning from his first line supervisor, a negative counseling form, or even be subject to UCMJ action by his superiors. The requirement for hair grooming standards is necessary to maintain uniformity within a military population. Many hairstyles are acceptable, as long as they are neat and conservative.     When you are in the Army, personal appearance is very important. It demonstrates the pride and self-discipline you feel as a soldier in the forces. There are many different restrictions and regulations on how a soldier should present him or herself. For instance, a soldier should always have their uniform neat, clean, and properly worn. There are also prohibitions on visible tattoos, jewelry, etc. However, you should always be well groomed when you present yourself in the army. Sideburns must be neatly trimmed, not flared, and must not extend downward beyond the lowest part of the outer ear opening. The face must be clean-shaven, except that mustaches are permitted. Although, if a mustache is worn it must be neatly trimmed. No part of the mustache will cover the upper lip line or extend horizontally beyond or below the corner points of the mouth where the upper and lower lips meet. By having that pride and self-discipline that American soldiers bring to their Service, it really gives the military that conservative image that they are trying to withhold. It is the responsibility of commanders to ensure that military personnel under their command present a neat and soldierly appearance. Therefore, in the absence of specific procedures or guidelines, commanders must determine a soldier’s compliance with standards in this regulation. Soldiers must take pride in their appearance at all times, in or out of uniform, on and off duty. Pride in appearance includes soldiers’ physical fitness and adherence to acceptable weight standards, in accordance with Army Regulation.
