Military Chief
Chiefs are vital, engaging professionals and mentors who have throughout history and present in today's military represent what it means to be a True Leader. The Navy frequently neglects the importance of the Chief. Knowing and understanding the history of the Chief, CPO 365, and the Chief’s Mess will assist with clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the Chief among the ranks. First, we must explore the history of the Chief to better understand their importance. According to CWO4 Lester B. Tucker (ret), USN, on April 1, 1893, the Chief rank was established to be the subject matter expert for junior Sailors and Officers alike. Chiefs are the icons that represent a leader you seek to solve problems, influence mission accomplishment, and drive policies, procedures, and standards. Along with these duties, Chiefs have the charge to develop and mold Sailors and junior Officers personally and professionally. …show more content…
Knowing and understanding the history of the Chief, CPO 365, and the Chief’s Mess help clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Chief among the ranks. The Chief Petty Officer Creed on goatlocker.org states, “Your new responsibilities and privileges do not appear in print. They have no official standing; they cannot be referred to by name, number, nor file. They have existed for over 100 years, Chiefs before you have freely accepted responsibility beyond the call of printed assignment. Their actions and their performance demanded the respect of their seniors as well as their juniors. It is now required that you be the fountain of wisdom, the ambassador of good will, the authority in personal relations as well as in technical applications. "Ask the Chief" is a household phrase in and out of the Navy. You are now the Chief.” Chiefs wear anchors not just as an identifier of their rank, but as a symbol of importance, courage, and devotion to their Sailors and junior

    The purpose of the Chain of Command is to install structure, discipline and respect into newer enlisted soldiers. Each branch has its own secretary that assigns forces under their jurisdictions to unify and specific combatant commanders they perform missions and report back to their chain of command. From the moment you raise your hand and join the military you do as you are instructed at any time to complete any mission during the time allotted, once completed whoever at the time has to report back to the Chain of Command. The importance of the chain of command is that it provides stability inside the work place for when incidents come about that need to be dealt with it sets up the structure for which you report all good and bad thing accidents mistakes tardiness and so on. all incidents in essence are intended to be dealt with on the lowest level before it is brought up to higher personnel as well as other reason's such as it helps build leadership responsibility and common knowledge of how to run a stable work place such as the leadership aspect it helps people who are or would not normally be able to take control of situations and control how things are ran they can take control and help whoever it is with the problem When it works well. When it doesn't work right, leadership is ineffective and some personnel end up doing other people's jobs for them. And can also lead to some sever consequences for the soldier or personnel.     There are many awards given out for leadership; however, watching Marines succeed because of the time and effort that their leaders have invested in them can be far more rewarding than any medal or certificate. There are many different methods and theories on leadership; however, some approaches are almost universal amongst leaders. Leadership is a continuous process, which requires limitless dedication that will constantly push Marines to their limits. Leaders should know not to fraternize with their subordinate Marines because of the ramifications that this causes, such as a loss of respect for the leader, and a loss of overall discipline. Leaders should know how to approach their Marines in any situation, and strive to understand their Marines’ strengths and weaknesses in order to help the Marines improve themselves. The subordinates who have good leaders will often put forth an extra effort because their leaders have set higher standards by challenging them, and they will strive to improve their weaknesses because the leader has held them accountable for their actions. Leaders may often find themselves wondering if their leadership has had any effect on their Marines; however, it becomes quite obvious that they are being effective whenever their Marines emulate the example that has been set. Anyone can tell their subordinates to do the right thing, but it takes real leadership to convince subordinates why they should do the right thing and then ensure that they actually do it; this can be accomplished if the leader is continuously doing the right thing, and holding their Marines to the same standard. The commitment that leaders make to their Marines is eternal, and it can show them that their leaders will always be there for them no matter what.…
