Accountability
What is accountability? The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping.

Why is accountability important to the Army? Accountability is a very important part of an enlisted and a NCO's job. The enlisted soldier is responsible for all items issued to him weather it be a weapon, NVG's, clothes, a vehicle, or another personal. Accountability of another personal is a very sensitive item, probably the most sensitive item for anyone. Accountability is also a way for a key leader to see that he has everyone he is responsible for.
Accountability is being dependable-arriving to work and appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing at the right time. Morning formation is the most important formation of the day. It is made to get accountability of everyone and put out any information that needs to be dealt with. Without having accountability there is no knowledge of where everybody is or what's going on. Accountability is extreamly important at this point of time, everyone is off doing other missions while the rest of us are still with the main group. With the holidays comimg up the importance of accountability will heighten even more. With people going on leave and coming back off leave and others comeing off missions such as opfore and school, and trying to keep up with everyone and getting information out to everyone then accountability is that much more important.

    What does it really mean to be a United States soldier? Most would say that it takes the embodiment of bravery, selfless service, honor, and sacrifice. And most would be right. But what good would these coveted traits be in the hands of an irresponsible soldier? Every service member has been charged to maintain their arms, equipment and self at all times. If they don’t, they could easily take themselves out of the fight, putting themselves and their battle buddies in harm’s way. This is called accountability. Though I am aware of the different types of accountability in my case, I failed to ensure one of the most important, which is personal accountability. One of the values in the United States Army, that most seek in soldiers is accountability. Accountability (in this case) means that you can be relied upon to arrive to work and appointments on time, meet deadlines, be in the right place at the right time, and do what needs to be done to complete the mission at hand. Failing to be accounted imposes actions to be taken not only upon yourself but on your chain of command as well. As a NCO, I know that I must lead from the front and set an example for the junior enlisted soldiers as well as my peers, and subordinates. I knew that once I raised my right hand and recited the oath, I became accountable not only for myself but for my fellow comrades as well and I learned that it begins with self.     Dictionary.com gives the following definition of reporting: an account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc..In the United States Army Reporting is one of the most important actions a soldier can display. Reporting is used to keep track of a soldiers location and or activities. Without some form of reporting, it would be impossible to monitor the actions or location of any given soldier. In a garrison environment, there are many reasons and situations, in which someone in a soldiers team would need to know where or what a soldier is doing. For instance, with our unit we dispatch trucks every Thursday for the following week. The order to dispatch a truck is given from the platoon sergeant and passed down through the ranks to the individual who is to dispatch the truck. if the soldier who is suppose to dispatch the truck fails to report to his command on the progress of the order given, then the command has no idea as to whether or not the truck was dispatched, if there is an issue dispatching the truck or if something is wrong with the dispatch. Reporting is also used in when inventorying equipment such as; weapons, nods, sights and optics, magazines, ammunition and other sensitive items of high value. During an arms room inventory, a lieutenant comes in with a check list of all items that should be in the arms room. He goes through the rifles, pistols and machine guns carefully reading each and every serial number making sure not to miss even one number. If a weapon has an attachment such as an optic, the optics serial number is also read . he or she then proceeds to mark the serial numbers called off keeping a record of every item. In the event the item is not on his or her list, he or she will write it into keep track of that item. After he or she is satisfied that all items are accounted for, he or she will take his or her list to the commanding officer for final…

    The importance of accountability, are being on time and in the right uniform. The main reason we have formations and that we are trying to keep account of personnel to know where everybody is at, at all times. I have learned in the past years that I have been in that being on time is the most important thing that you need to do. For one the accountability of personnel is major, it plays a big role in the deployment and the readiness of soldiers. I would have to say that I was wrong for not showing up at my appointed place of duty I should have gotten up and made it to the swimming pool. But in all things that have been done I have seen that accountability is the most important asset here for work. In doing so it makes sure that everybody is on the same page at the same time in order to do that you have to follow orders that were given to you. I may have made mistakes but the army also teaches us that we are a family and if anything stick together and help the other person out if you see that there is something wrong or them not getting up for formations. Well it has been a hard time her e but in all aspect of things I have learned that the account of people is very high because if one person is gone it could mess up and crew or any team that plays a big role into this deployment. I never understood what the role was till my first deployment but you have to always be prepared for the worst in everything that you do. I have to realize that it’s not just me that’s here it’s a whole brigade that makes moves and make things happen. Like I know that I should have been on time and that I should have showed up. So yes I take the fault for that but I still see that in the long run we all have to stick together in order for things to happen in the right way.
