Miley Cyrus’s performance at the MTV Video Music Award’s has been debated, criticized, and dissected to the point of absurdity. Among the responses of many people on the web about her crass declaration of sexuality (Cyrus, who is twenty years old, danced in a pale-latex bra and panties and rubbed herself with a huge foam finger) that asked whether the performance degraded or empowered. Performing on live television is always a “go big or go home” kind of thing. But when Miley Cyrus stepped onto the stage at the VMA’s, she clearly set the scale for almost going too far. Miley made gestures that could’ve been interpreted as too sexual for the audience that she was performing for, which are mostly still her younger fans from when she was “Hannah Montana”. Later into the performance, Robin Thicke sang one of his new hits “Blurred Lines” – which is another controversy all on its own, and she joined in. In many people’s opinions of the whole performance, they say she showed many racist gestures, and explicit dance moves, that were not necessary. The critiques agreed; they weren’t sure what the objective of Miley Cryus’ performance was.
The critic Jody Rosen called it “a minstrel show routine whose ghoulishness was heightened by Cyrus’s madcap charisma” (Weiss, 2013). While the rhetorical energy inspired by a mediocre young singer dancing half-naked at an awards show on TV was striking, it’s not really new.
