In this paper we are going to analyze Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus, and Jean Francois Millet’s Harvesters Resting. The former is a Baroque style painting from Rome, Italy created around 1601 AD. It is approximately 141 x 196.2 cm in size, and it is currently located at The National Gallery of London in London, England. The latter is a Realism style painting form Barbizon, France developed 1850 – 1853 AD. It is approximately 67.3x 119.7 cm in size, and it is currently located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mass. These two works of art should be compared because of how important they were to their perspective eras, using biblical scenes to further the ideology of the perspective eras.
With the Supper at Emmaus painting, Caravaggio furthered his tenebrism technique, the deep contrasts of light in dark, which helped develop the great works of the Baroque period. In the painting, Caravaggio took the words of the Gospel of Mark (16:12) as it said that Jesus appeared to them “in another form”, and depicts Christ without a beard which as very unusual at the time. I believe another reason why he depicts him without a beard is to show his more human side. He depicts the apostles as not believing Christ, or as shocked, as he reveals himself to them. Caravaggio also leaves an empty space in front of Christ, between the disciples, as if to invite the viewer to be a part of the scene, making your presence the completion of the scene. This piece was part of the “Counter-Reformation” era that tried to combat the continued threat of Protestantism. “Counter-Reformation art” was commissioned mostly by the Catholic Church as a means to evoke strong emotion by using religious art so that the viewer would be less likely to be persuaded by the Protestans.
With Jean Francois Millet, his painting Harvesters Resting was the only painting that Millet won an award for. It is considered his masterpiece; as he wanted to turn the genre of realism from a scene

    The image is a dramatization of the moment Jesus reveals himself to his disciples after his resurrection, before disappearing from their sight (Luke 24: 30-31). It displays all of the emotional intensity and theatre required of a religious image of that time. Christ reveals himself as he raises his arm to bless the bread, with his figure illuminated by an indeterminate source of light (Harris 2010). This extreme use of chiaroscuro focuses the viewer’s attention on Christ and his two disciples. Christ’s right arm is dramatically foreshortened, reaching out and bringing the viewer into the scene. His two disciples are watching on with in astonishment, while the innkeeper is oblivious. Unusually, they are depicted as average townspeople and are perhaps the very same people who the image was intended. The disciple to his left has theatrically outstretched his arms symbolising Jesus on the cross, hence creating another invitation to participate.     Leonardo's version of the Last Supper was painted El fresco depicting the scene passively without emotion. The work has the supper table horizontal across the lower third and Jesus and his twelve disciples dining behind it, before a backdrop of both man made structure and natural landscape. The artwork is un-cluttered and simple. The lighting is subtle and non-dramatic. Colour is conservative and dull this is partly due to the limited paint available and the technique and decay of fresco painting.     To understand the significance of a piece of art, one must first come to understand what the piece of art is. Procaccini's The Scourging of Christ is a piece that dates from the early 17th Century. Being an Italian piece from this period, it is clear that the piece was created in a time that featured Baroque art as its main movement. As is common of the age, Procaccini creates a sense of space and depth not through linear and aerial perspective, but rather through varying light and shadow. This is one of the traits of Baroque art, as innovated by Annibale Carracci.
