Le Chateau is a leading Canadian specialty retailer that offers contemporary fashion apparel, accessories and footwear. Founded in 1959 by Hershel Segal, the retailer was originally named “Le Chateau Men’s Wear”. The name was changed in 1962 to “Le Chateau”, when the product offering grew to include women’s clothing as well. Hershel and Jane Segal own a majority stake in the company, where through voting they control 76.4% of the company (Company Fillings, 2011). At first, Le Chateau’s target market and positioning were unclear; however, the company has evolved into a clothing retailer that attracts fashion-forward, style-conscious women and men. Through their quick identification of and response to fashion trends, Le Chateau has successfully built a strong and reputable brand. Committed to research, design and product development, they take pride in their vertically integrated operations, for approximately 40% of the apparel is manufactured in its own Canadian production facilities (Annual Report, 2010).…

Parsons The New School for Design, beginning Januray 22nd, was exhibiting the original design creations of Sophie Gimbel, champion of American Couture and Parsons benefactor, in the Aronson Gallery at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center until February 12, 2013. The exhibit curated by Beth Dincuff, a part-time assistant professor, in conjunction with Saks Fifth Avenue, displays and provides an insight into Gimbel’s original design creations. It encompassed a wide-range of American and European 20th century garments, featuring 17 original pieces from the Parsons Fashion Archive made by the Salon Modern artisans; pieces of which I will be presenting pictures subsequently in this essay. My favorite pieces being the cocktail dress with appliqued chinoiserie figures, the taffeta dress with under-structure of boning and tulle, the cocktail dress with streaming bows and pearlescent sequins, the evening dress with pin tucks set into “hand-span” waist, the “harlequinade” velvet/satin dress with net overlays and, the sequined evening sheath with confectionary tulle overskirt. Each piece is crafted with notable precision and high quality materials down to the last sequined detail.…

The exhibition will include several garments from the May 2005 Paris auction of the private collection of Poiret's descendants, many of which had never been photographed or put on public display. The Metropolitan Museum acquired several of these garments – which were made for Poiret's wife Denise, who was his muse and wore his designs without concession to prevailing tastes – at the auction. While apprenticing in his teens to an umbrella maker, Paul Poiret entered the world of fashion when he sold some of his sketches to Madeleine Cheruit at her Paris fashion house. After stints with designers Doucet and Worth, he opened his own house in 1903 and was boosted by the patronage of Réjane, a famous actress of the period, among others. In his groundbreaking designs, he led the way to the chemise dress with his revival of Directoire silhouettes and his referencing of the simple cuts of ethnic costume. In 1911 he became the first fashion designer to create and market his own perfume, which he named after Rosine, his oldest…

New York is the world's largest city of fashion in the present day, but this relationship is only one that has been established in the last century or so. Paris was the centre of fashion since fashion's beginning, but throughout fashion's history, America has come out as the present leader in fashion. Fashion has evolved into something that is no longer dictated by high society, but accessible by all people. Many things have influenced the way American women's fashion has panned out over the centuries, whether it is belief systems of the time, or major events in history. It is a process that can be followed and observed giving answers to why and how fashion has evolved over time.
