Michael Gorman Cruciformity
Michael Gorman identifies a “spiritual-ethical dimension of the theology of the cross” that is evident throughout the NT and the Christian tradition that he calls cruciformity. He says, “Cruciformity is Spirit-enabled conformity to the indwelling crucified and resurrected Christ. It is the ministry of the living Christ, who re-shapes all relationships and responsibilities to express the self-giving, life-giving love of God that was displayed on the cross.” This purpose of this paper is to critique Gorman’s statement in the light of Romans.

Gorman argues that Paul always has the cross in mind when he refers to Christ’s death therefore when drawing out Paul’s theology of the cross we must consider not only explicit mentions of the cross but also any references to Christ’s death. He identifies thirteen narrative patterns of Christ’s death in Paul’s writings which can be grouped into four fundamental patterns of cruciformity. These four patterns all appear in Romans.

Cruciform faith: faithful obedience and righteousness (Rom 3:22, 26 and 5:18-19).
Cruciform love: conforming to the voluntary self-giving and self-emptying regard for others (Rom 3:25; 4: 25; 5:6-11; 8:3, 17, 32; 15:3).

    By the end of the third century AD, the Roman Empire was beginning to become undone, with multiple frontiers falling to Barbaric, Gothic and Persian attacks.     From the beginning of Paul’s letter to the Romans is not only a letter to the Gentile church in Rome, but also a great introduction to the Gospel for anyone, believer or non-believer to get a starting point from which to form a world view. Paul is clear from Romans 1:3-5 states that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, and the Son of God. Within the first chapter of Romans, Paul is clear in that God’s wrath is on the whole earth, believer and non-believer. Romans 1:20 states that God’s invisible attributes, eternal power and divine nature can be seen in the created world. Meaning that those people, whom have never heard of the Gospel of Christ, can still understand God, and have a relationship with him. Paul goes on into Romans chapter three about human nature in the sinful state that he has fallen into, Romans 3:23 states that all sinned and will fall short of the Glory of God. Paul follows this with Romans 6:23 that states the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life with Christ Jesus out Lord. Those two verses sum up not only Paul’s view that the world is full of sinners, but that the cost of that sin is death and eternal life away from God. If we, like Paul states have a sinful nature, than we can do nothing but sin. Christ came to pay the cost of that sin, and Paul states that in Romans 5:8, that God demonstrated his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Paul also shares with us the way to salvation is through Christ Jesus alone. In Roman s 10:9 we find the way to be saved, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Paul, in four short small verses, has not only laid out that the world is sinful, the cost for that sin is death, but has also told us how to find salvation from the death, in the person of Jesus Christ.
