The Lebanon Civil War and Declining Economic Prospects:
Much of Lebanese Immigration occurred between the 1940s and 1990s because of the large amount of Immigrants fleeing the Lebanon Civil War. Around 60,000 Lebanese immigrated to the U.S. between 1948 and 1985. Another reason why Lebanese Americans left Lebanon was due to declining economic prospects after the war.
Why the Lebanese Came to the U.S. and Their Expectations The majority of Lebanese immigrants came to the United States for the new and plentiful economic opportunities this country offered and because it was considered to be prestigious to have family in the United States. Having a Lebanese son or daughter who lived in the United States became a status symbol in Lebanese culture. Michael Ellis DeBakey was a Lebanese American who greatly influenced medicine and science. Debakey worked as a cardiac surgeon for much of his life, and made great medical breakthroughs in his area.
Michael DeBakey was born on September 7, 1908 in Louisiana. He grew up in a positive environment, with both of his parents being extremely successful. Michael excelled in school and went on to become a surgeon, the same path his brother took. He would visit his father’s drugstore after school, which was where he became interested in medicine.
Debakey invented the roller-pump, an apparatus that would later be vital for the creation of the heart-lung machine. His invention had the ability to provide a flow of blood during procedures. This allowed open-heart surgery to be possible. He was also a pioneer in bypass surgery for patients that needed to replace the arteries leading in and out of the heart due to disease. My Lebanese great grandmother was operated on by Doctor Debakey. She underwent triple bypass surgery and he saved her
