Introduction The purpose of this case study is to first define leadership then contrast leadership and management. I will describe the three most important differences between a leader and manager and summarize the conclusions of trait theories of leadership while describing the differences between past and recent theories. I will explore the central tenets and limitations of behavioral theories and finally, describe the central contribution of contingency theory of leadership.
Leadership versus Management While many researchers believe there are similarities and perhaps some overlapping qualities between leadership and management, most agree their focus is definitely different. Leaders focus on long-term vision, goals, and establishing direction for the organization as a whole, while managers have a more narrow focus and deal with specific processes like planning, organizing, budgeting, and problem solving. Leaders have a 50,000 foot view of the organization and managers work at ground level. While there are many differences leadership and management, I will focus on what I believe are the three most critical differences. The first most important difference between a leader and manager is how they interact with their subordinates. Leaders strive to inspire employees to excellence and align the employees’ goals and successes with that of the organizations. Managers strive to control the work and work force by developing standards and measuring productivity and efficiency. The second most important difference between leadership and management is in terms of time. Leaders are concerned with long term goals such as the strategic vision, mission and direction of the organization. Managers think more short term, focusing on the here and now. They are more apt to accept the status quo, while leaders embrace creativity and change. Managers are

    Leadership and management should essentially come together. They are not in fact similar but tend to create the same complimentary effect upon each other. The two concepts should not be separated as it may not prove worthy in solving a particular problem. Management and leadership, both have different understanding of opinions by people.
