Critical Thinking Application Critical thinking is a vital tool needed in good decision-making. The problem with this is everyone may think that they are critical thinker when, in fact, they are not. One’s on thinking is filled with bias, distorted, or prejudiced. Critical thinking differs from person to person much of the time relaying on one’s on motivation of thought. Only when one takes the time to look at all the facts surrounding the problem and base their decision on those facts along can one become a critical thinker. Critical thinking not only enhances one’s thinking, but also creates a better person who can make improved decisions. Defining Critical Thinking One must first understand that thinking is the counterpart of critical thinking. According to Paul & Elder (2006) “the best thinkers think about their thinking, they are highly purposeful, they have intellectual “tools” that they use to raise the quality of their thinking, they distinguish their thoughts from their feelings and desires, they routinely take thinking apart, and they routinely evaluate thinking – determining its strengths and weaknesses” (Critical Thinking, page xiv – xv). They must also learn to communicate their thoughts through language, images, or even art forms. According to Foundation for Critical Thinking (2009), Edward Glaser (1941) stated critical thinking “involves three things: (1) an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one’s experiences, (2) knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and (3) some skill in applying those methods” (Defining Critical Thinking, para. 12). Whereas Scriven & Paul (1987) based critical thinking “on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness” (Defining Critical Thinking, para. 2).While
