MGMT 702 (101) CRAFTING AND EXECUTING STRATEGY

Fall 2014: Professor Jai Goolsarran

Research and Case Analysis No. 1 (10%): Costco Wholesale Corporation

Please be advised that our Research and Case Analysis No. 1 (10%) will be on Costco Wholesale Corporation, the case material for which is to be found at pages 2 to 21 of the prescribed casebook for the course. The case is entitled, “Costco Wholesale in 2012: Mission, Business Model, and Strategy”. I am aware of the fact that the Bookstore has apparently not ordered any copies of the casebook. This being the case, and in recognition of the fact that our case analysis assignments are scheduled to begin next week, I suggest that colleagues access the 2007 version of the case from the Internet, the link to which is:

https://cours.etsmtl.ca/gol470/Lectures/3.%20costco%20strategy%20wareshousing.pdf

Colleagues should also review the article, Decency Means More Than “Always Low Prices”: A Comparison of Costco to Wal-Mart’s Sam’s Club, Academy of Management Review, August 2006, which could accessed from the Internet, the link to which is:

http://www.ou.edu/russell/UGcomp/Cascio.pdf

Additionally, colleagues are required to review the information provided on the corporation’s website about its management and operations and, if not too inconvenient, to visit one of the corporation’s warehouses. And so, too, colleagues are required to review the 2013 Annual Report for the corporation.

Colleagues are expected to view the video of a recent presentation by Jim Sinegal (Costco’s founder and now retired CEO), the link to which is:

Part A of Research and Case Analysis would be done in class in Week No. 3 (September 15 – 19, 2014). Part A questions would be some basic questions on the assigned materials. Part B questions would be distributed in class and would require colleagues to prepare a word document with their responses. The submission date for Part B

Costco’s mission: “To continually provide our members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible price” directly reflects upon its business model to produce high sales volumes and swift inventory turnover through the use of low prices on a wide range of select merchandise (p. 217). Costco manages to operate with high profitability within lower gross margins due to its high volume purchasing, efficient distribution, and reduced handling of merchandise in no-frills, self-service warehouse facilities (p. 217). Wal-Mart is an unstoppable force and revenues of $247 billion with a growth of 15% a year. Wal-Mart is known to drive companies like Kmart to bankruptcy. Enter Costco that is the competitor that has shaken Wal-Mart’s reigning posture and caused a stir in businesses processes. Costco’s is approximately 30% the size of Wal-Mart and Costco competes against Sam’s approach to bulk sales. Sam’s has had quit the strife among battling for a top position. During the past 20 years Sam’s has had more than 5 CEO’s and has incorporated many strategies in order to try to gain control of top business command. All these ploys have been smothered by Costco’s array of visual space and prestigious options. Consider some figures. Sam's Club has 71% more U.S. stores than Costco (532 to 312), yet for the year ended Aug. 31, Costco had 5% more sales ($34.4 billion vs. an estimated $32.9 billion). The average Costco store generates nearly double the revenue of a Sam's Club ($112 million vs. $63 million), (Helyar,…

I feel my number one area of improvement would be #1, my need for power and to be in control at all times. My husband is someone is quick to point out my need to control and run everything and that I don’t listen and downplay his ideas. Furthermore, I run an in home daycare so I don’t interact much with people to get their ideas. In this personality flaw of mine I can combine my strength of being a leader and continue applying it at all times but practice being more sensitive to other people’s views. I can learn convey a better interest in other people ideas, be flexible and open to negotiation. So I think my best time to try and implement my plans is in February when my husband returns from deployment. We normally unwind and recap our day and discuss business between 7-8pm, right before we get ready for bed. At that time when my husband expresses any ideas that he have, I will try to be more sensitive, and optimistic to his views.…

When Jim Sinegal founded Costco in 1983, the mission was to continually provide its members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices. In looking at the company’s performance in the fiscal years 2000-2006, the mission, to build a financially healthy company, has paid off well for those stockholders who invested in the membership warehouse idea. Our analysis looks at four areas to understand their financial performance, the first, their ability to secure loans from banks and how much of their assets are financed from debt, next, their ability to be able to liquate assets if needed, their inventory turnover in a years time period, and finally the sales and profit margins. What we found was that Costco is doing well financially in key areas, with one area of caution being their profititability, which is below their direct competitors, and industry averages.…
