Mexican Food
Mexican food is derived from a mix between Spanish and native indian gastronomy. The tremendous variety of food highlights the cultural diversity that exists in Mexico, as well as its history. Mexican food is one of the most known, as well as praised foods in the world due to their extravagance, flavour and variety of dishes.

The Olmec’s where the first inhabitants of the country; and they utilized hunting and collective methods as means to obtain food. After them came the Mayans; whose major food discovery was cacao and they also utilized more advanced methods of agriculture. The Aztecs came after the Mayans and food collection saw its switch towards food production. The Aztecs started cultivating, domesticating and utilizing more efficient ways to grow crops. Then the Spanish arrived, who not only brought a different culture, but also a different diet. It is this mix, of Spaniard and native foods, which we now come to recognize as Mexican food. It is also important to mention that there are other minor influences to Mexican food, such as African, Asian, and Middle Eastern influences, however they re not as significant as the Spaniard influence.

Mexican food is praised for its variety of plates, flavours, condiments and beauty. It is important to highlight that this culinary art still remains women dominant. Also individual’s daily routines are based around food, which is why food is so important in Mexican society as it unites people. Another amazing attribute to Mexican cousin is the fact that there are dishes specifically designated for festive days and important occasions. For example; Chilles rellenos, which appearance reflects the colours of the Mexican flag, are specifically served on Independence

    Tex-Mex foods consist of a variety of the same ingredients as Mexican food.     In the western area of the U.S, the most common Spanish speakers are Mexican, making their food the most prevalent. This has created a disconnect in the minds of the residents because they automatically assume any Spanish person or Latin food they come across is automatically from Mexico.     Growing up in a Mexican household meant food, all the time. When I think back as far as I can remember, there isn’t a moment I recall that my grandma was not steady stirring up something in the kitchen. Waking up at the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast was a breeze for her, and for a traditional Mexican household it is nothing out of the ordinary. Tortillas, the number one staple food in Mexico, were created daily, and usually the preparation for lunch or dinner continued as soon as breakfast had finished. It is embedded in the Mexican culture for the women to be responsible in keeping a home together; with the preparation of fresh meals, and large meals at that, it allows families to come together each day and form a bond. Food was, and is, used as a means of non-verbal communication; and the dishes prepared are just as unique as the person preparing them. When guests came over to visit, that only meant more food to be cooked, and more delicious snacks to be enjoyed. Abuelas (grandmas) are notorious for cooking the best of the best when a visitor is present, even if that visitor is a five-year-old grandchild. It’s a way of conveying respect to that individual, in addition to ensuring they are not hungry, thirsty, or uncomfortable. For the Mexican wife of the household, every detail is important. The entire home is a symbol of what you represent: from the cleanliness of your home, to the delectable of your food, and even the obedience of your children. This is what I feel was important to the mothers, aunts, and grandmas I grew up around. At the end of the day, the woman was judged based on the complete infrastructure of her home.…
