When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

The tank tops worn by students at Upper Perkiomen High School should not completely eliminated without spoken reasoning. Listed as the seventh rule in the student handbook, it is stated, “Tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, and garments with spaghetti straps are not permitted in school” (52). This rule states that students may not wear any top that does not cover their shoulders. My thought process, and many other students, believe this rule is absurd and has no true meaning. Students have never been clarified on why this rule is in place, although we are expected to follow it. Is it because the administrators think possible bra straps are provocative? Is it just plainly because they think shoulders are distracting? Students…

    What High School Is?

“What High School Is,” is a chapter from a book called Horace’s Compromise: The Dilemma of American High School, and was written by Theodore R. Sizer in 1984. Mr. Sizer starts the chapter out with a story of a typical boy named mark who is in the eleventh grade. In this story the author describes in detail how Mark spends one of his time blocked days in high school. Mr. Sizer feels it is important to analyze how Mark spends his time because he feels it is a reflection, with some degree of variation, of how most high school students spend their time in school. Mr. Sizer argues, “taking subjects” in a systematized, conveyer-belt way is what is what one does in high school (Sizer). He feels that this process is not related to the rhetorical goals of education; however, it is tolerated by most Americans. In addition, Mr. Sizer argues that there is little demand for synthesis of subjects and that courses are too broad and there is just not enough time to cover all the material.…

One’s introduction to high school is the foundation for higher level education and work until retirement. If the foundation is not set right, it can cause everything else to collapse. In an effort to regulate this and to help everyone succeed, schools throughout the nation are restructuring their education system by putting incoming freshmen in a separate setting from the rest of the community. While this seems like a good idea, it has some serious faults. In order to help the incoming high schoolers succeed, they need to get exposure to the setting…

I wanted to try a lot of new things, and I decided that high school is the place to start. I didn't only want to go to this school because of the chance of success, but because of the experience I will gain. The drab thought of not getting into BCTHS would've made me sullen. The thought of high school always scared me until I was told one day that high school is all about what you make it, so I decided to concede my fears. I decided that if you choose not to do the work, you are choosing to be unsuccessful and to be displaced out of the school. If you choose to be out going, thoughtful, respectful, and courageous, it will be everything you hope for. Once I have realized that I was the only thing standing between making or breaking my high school experience, I knew this was where I needed to be to be happy. I decided that there was one school I had to attend to insure that my high school experience would be everything I wanted it to be, and that school was BCTHS. I am now not afraid to attend high school, and I cant wait to embark on this journey with you and all of my other…

High school was my time to stop fooling around. The first day of high school, I awoke to the aroma of coffee brewing on the stove. As I get ready to head out my sister approached me, and told me “Education is the key that opens the door many possibilities you can be and do in your near future” I was so nervous the sweat started dripping from my palms, and I suddenly felt 15 degrees hotter. I was nervous, I knew this is the time to get serious. Immediately a thought came across “ how well I do these four years can affect my entire life”. At first high school might look like a time to have fun and have no worries, which was my initial thought. Later on you start to realize that you need work hard. I thought “How would my future look? I don’t want to end up hopelessly. I want to make something of myself. Sometimes it can be hard though. I just have to work through the pain. At this point it’s make it or break it, success is my only…
