Methods of Conversion
Direct conversion in the library
Conversion is the process in which data is changed from the old system to the new system. This process must be planned by professional I.T. users in the library to change the old system to the new system whilst making miniature or no mistakes. Even though there are 4 types of conversion, in the Liverpool library system they use direct conversion every couple of months to ensure that the old data of customers that is not needed is removed. E.g. data of customers who have paid overdue books are no longer need but those who have not paid are still needed in the system and are copied to the new system. Even though this method of conversion is not very commonly used it is very effective in renewing the library’s system. This system works by setting a specific date in which a certain system which is the old system will stop then the new system will replace the old system after the information and data is completely copied and filtered. There is also a negative point to this method of conversion. If the new system is non operational and not running, the old system which is down cannot be used as a backup system, therefore the computer system in the library will be down until a newer system is used to replace the new non operational system.
Parallel conversion in the library
Although modern library are now starting to use the parallel method of conversion in which is greater in accuracy and less in errors. Parallel method of conversion requires more people/users to make this method work. It requires for both the old and the new system to run at the same time. Therefore if the new system is down the old system can still be used unlike the previous method of conversion in which if the new system are down the whole system are down. In this method if the new system is down the old system can be used as the backup system for the time being until the new system is repaired and operational for complete conversion to

Each of the department’s data are collected from different sources, some data is stored on hard copies that need to be reentered into the other system so that it is digitally available, which other branches are currently using. As a result of all the time it takes to transfer all existing data currently on hard copy, a lot of manpower hours are being wasted during this process. With the use of multiple codes on the many business systems that are currently in place, data needs to be converted to the proper code before each system can recognize the data. The above mentioned two issues, data that is hard copied and multiple code issues, is translated to losing a portion of the company’s profit margin because of the excess man-hours that are spent on the two issues. A good example of both issues that the income and balance sheets are labor intensive and will be completed 15-20 days after the month has ended. Since there is a lot of manpower required to complete the income and balance sheets, there needed to be a solution to try and resolve the large amounts of man-hours wasted completing these…

Now, during his private moment, Lassiter was beginning to recognize the problems and complexities he faced with the system conversion. The work of his marketing staff, who were unable to access the new computer system to handle their accounts, had ground to a halt. Even worse, something had happened to the data in most of the workstations, which meant that conference registrations and other functions had to be done manually. These inconveniences, however, were minor compared to Lassiter’s uneasy feeling that there were problems with Midsouth’s whole approach to the management of information technology. Lassiter knew that time was of the essence and that he might have to step in and manage the conversion, even though he had no information technology background. He wondered what he should do next.…
