M.S. is a 35-year-old female who came into urgent care at Kaiser Permanente Riverside. She presented with a sore ankle that was causing her problems after accidently twisting it by missing a step in going down a set of stairs. The only prior medical history that M.S. has is a history of asthma that is currently managed with appropriate medications. Even though she has a history of asthma, she reports smoking cigarettes and often drinks alcohol. She also reported not having a very healthy diet. Upon examination of M.S. ankle, it is concluded that she minors sprained. During normal examination, her vitals signs are obtained which showed a respiratory rate of 16, pulse of 100, temperature 97.2OF, blood pressure of 151/91, pulse oximetry of 99%. Our patient had a history of drug abuse and as such had only one home medication, which is Methadone. Methadone has been associated with thrombocytopenia in patients with hepatitis. She does have hepatitis hence she is at risk for thrombocytopenia because of methadone. This patient has continued this therapy throughout her stay in the hospital, as such not meeting any of the criteria established in the table above plus she has had methadone for years prior to hospitalization.5…

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was first discovered in the 1880s and is a dangerous and versatile pathogen that causes many types of severe diseases. Most commonly it causes skin infections, respiratory tract infections, and food poisoning. In the 1940s, when the antibiotic medications such as penicillin was discovered and introduced, it became a primary treatment for S. aureus infections. However, misusing and overusing the use of antibiotics caused the evolution of these bacteria to become resistant to drugs that were designed to combat these infections.
