Yann Truong
ESC Rennes Business School

Past. research. has. rarely. included. both. intrinsic. and. extrinsic. aspirations. antecedents. in. predicting. luxury. consumption,. and. most. studies. have. assumed. that. conspicuous. antecedents. are. predominant. in. consumers’. motivations .. The. objective.of.this.study.is.to.build.and.test.a.model.of.the.effects.of.extrinsic.and. intrinsic.personal.aspirations.on.consumer.decision.making.in.the.luxury.goods. market .. The. findings. of. the. study,. conducted. in. France,. show. that. extrinsic. aspirations. are. more. strongly. related. to. conspicuous. consumption. than. to. quality. search. and. self-directed. pleasure,. suggesting. that. extrinsically. motivated. consumers. buy. luxury. brands. mainly,. but. not. wholly,. as. part. of. conspicuous. consumption. behaviour .. However,. intrinsic. aspirations. are. much. more. strongly. related. to. self-directed. pleasure. and. quality. search. than. are. extrinsically. aspirations,. suggesting. that. these. consumers. are. more. focused. on. their. own. pleasure. of. ownership. than. on. the. display. of. conspicuous. consumption .. The. findings. suggest. that. practitioners. should. take. into. consideration. both. types. of. consumer. motivation. in. the. design. of. their. marketing. campaigns,. in. order. to. increase. audience. reach. and. improve. brand. loyalty. in. the. long. run .. It. is. also. recommended. that. market. researchers. adapt. current. segmentation. and. brand. measurement.tools.to.include.intrinsic.motivations .

A metaphor is where you show how two unrelated things are similar. For example by saying "Love is a roller-coaster.” A key aspect of a metaphor is use a specific transference of a word into another context. The human mind creates comparisons between different things. The best writers use metaphors. Like poetry, a metaphor will express a thousand different meanings all at once, allowing the writer to convey much more content than they could do otherwise. More than playing simple word games, the use of metaphors in your writing can elevate your stories to a place next to the greatest authors in the world.…

Both images show restroom signs that are discriminatory or prejudice against another race or being. In District 9, there is evidence of discrimination against the aliens or ‘prawns’. This refers back to the Apartheid Era, where White Supremacy ruled over the nation of South Africa and caused an unfair racial divide. The ‘white people’ were more privileged than the other races and were forbidden to integrate with said races. The above images assist in showing the similar social issues present in the film as well as during the Apartheid Era.…

One of the stories I felt wasn't as purposeful as any of the other stories is "Metaphor". I felt that the story relates very little to the actual chapter. "Metaphor" is the comic strip talking about metaphors, but in a way that wouldn't make sense being in the "Confronting Class" chapter. It shows a professor and her student talking about school related stuff and ways people use metaphors. It also shows a picture of the student in jail, showing a metaphor involving kids going to school. Even though this comic strip isn't bad, I don't feel like it belongs in this…

In the reading selection “Metaphors We Live By” by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the authors convey that metaphors are used on a daily basis by people like you and I. Some metaphors we use are easier to spot and understand than others. With metaphors there is a shifting in meaning between words or phrases by analogy or by comparison, through this we are shown likeness in the words we did not expect. Metaphors are infused in the lyrics of today music, famous rappers and singers use them to make example of people or places. I”ve found metaphors to be used in sports by athletes and sportscasters. Literature of the present and past are full of metaphors that draw you into the book or story you are reading.…

Whether we know it or not, we make use of metaphors and the many ways in which they help us make sense of the world. A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech that identifies an object or an idea that is similar to an unrelated thing. The use of metaphors and the language that it portrays helps to create new insight and evidence of the universe. Metaphors not only help classify the culture and diverseness of the natural world, and help interpret the scientific world, but help us set our outlooks on society; however, some may argue metaphors are an impractical use of our language that only complicate things that can instead be stated clearer.…

For this task, I worked with Sophie Davidson to create a digital story for the poem Primary Education By Yvette Holt. The poem was quite literal and did not make use any metaphors in the written work. However, after further analysis and use of creative thinking, we conjured many metaphors to add a deeper meaning to the words in the poem. I drew on my knowledge of the Aboriginal culture that I have encountered on my travels, both the beautiful culture and the modern corruption of the culture in rural communities. This poem drew on a peaceful beginning of life for the author.…

Metaphors merge two superficially incompatible concepts to create symbolism. Metaphors have entailments through which they highlight and make coherent certain aspects of our experience. (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980:132). Metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action.…

    The Metaphor Essay

Everyone has a different view on life. One's perception can significantly impact the way that he/she views the rest of the world. This perception can be both positive and negative. Perception often plays a big role in determining how one is viewed by both themselves and others. People are often judged by their appearance and their actions. However, it is things such as their personality and their character that truly define them as individuals. In Budge Wilson's "The Metaphor," Miss Hancock is faced with the fact that other individuals often overlook her. Though others may not be aware of what they are doing, their actions can greatly impact another individual throughout their lifetime. The way that one is perceived can both positively and negatively affect the way that others view them as an individual, which can greatly affect their entire life.…

Metaphors are part of technology simply because language is a part of technology and metaphors are “characteristics of language,” as Lakoff and Johnson explain that make up this “extraordinary language” that people use on a daily basis (3). Many people simply consider metaphors as “just words,” not thoughts or ideas, when actually they are heavily involved with the “conceptual system” and the way people think, interact, explain, and perceive the world based on ideas and objects. This is translated into the virtual world because communication and language is a huge part of the technological culture, and without it, technology would be nonexistent because it enhances the ways in which people express their thoughts to one another. One separate…

In today’s day and age, it is almost impossible to feel completely “free”. No matter where we go or who we interact with, there is always someone more powerful than ourselves watching our every move, just waiting for us to slip up. Whether it's your boss, law enforcement, or a strict teacher, these figures never fail to make their omnipresent looming known. These themes are constantly prevalent in our media, including books such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Throughout Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, there is an abundance of symbolic patterns and hidden metaphors. Whether discussing the dark intentions of the drug “soma”, or what it truly means to be happy, it is impossible to become bored with the web of meaning Huxley has created. In Brave New World, we are introduced to the concept of originality,…
