Messianic Prophecy in Old Testament
Old Testament Survey Final Paper

Abraham leading Isaac to Moriah

By:Denise Grosskopf Feb. 15, 2011

Messianic Scripture O.T. Survey The Old Testament of the Bible is loaded with Messianic prophecies. From whom the Messiah will be to what the Messiah will do; you can find it prophesied about in the Old Testament. Messianic prophecy is in each book of the Old Testament and is fulfilled in the New Testament; beginning in the book of Genesis and each book after foretelling very specific aspects of the Messiah to come. Many who read the Bible miss these important concepts. Some take note of them; yet spend little time in understanding the fullness of the prophecies. None can deny that the Old Testament is important in understanding Biblical history as well as whom Christ is. When tracing Messianic prophecy throughout the Old Testament many concepts repeat themselves in many different eras in Biblical History. I have chosen for the purpose of this paper to trace Is. 53.10”Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.” As you read Chapter 53 of Isaiah take note of the most amazing prediction of Christ’s death on the cross. Many verses explain why it was the Lord’s will to crush Christ. The word crush has synonyms some of those are: wounded, or pierced, referring to His death on the cross, pierced by nails (2) bruised, which means “crushed” as under a burden, the weight of sin which was laid on Him; (3) chastised, or punished as though He had broken the law, in this case with stripes from the scourging. (Wiersbe 1993) The portion of Is. 53.10 that says “he will see his offspring and prolong his days;” does not refer to

The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus are at the crux of Christianity. In hind sight what seemed like foolishness to some on lookers has become the wisdom of God triumphing over evil by the death of His Christ Jesus on the cross. Like the stanza of a well known verse, Christ cried out, “God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” This cry from the cross on the day of His crucifixion was not a cry of defeat, on the contrary; it was a cry of victory in the ears of those familiar with the blessed twenty second Psalm written by His very namesake David the king, the priest, the psalmist. Victory…

The Old Testament refers to Jesus Christ. Jesus himself made the claim that the old Scriptures spoke about him, which was shown in one of his first sermons in Nazareth. While there, Jesus went to the Synagogue on the Sabbath and read from Isaiah 61. Jesus told his listeners what he just read from Isaiah had been fulfilled in him (Luke 4:16-21). In another instance Jesus was talking with his disciples after his resurrection. In this dialogue he explained to them the examples that related the Scriptures [Old Testament]…

The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…

The Old Testament ending leaves the reader very unsatisfied as the resolution to much of the issues, suffering and discomfort of God’s people was not resolved. It is not until the death of Christ in the New Testament that the reader can understand the significance of God’s sovereignty in these times of seemingly unfulfilled promises. Most of the Old Testament covenants that remained unfulfilled or only partially fulfilled were those in regards to David. In the book of Jeremiah it is written: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely.” (23:5-6). David is promised that from his line a king will reign over all people. David is also promised that the Messiah would come from his line so it is understandable why the Jews living around Jesus were so shocked to discover that he would not be overthrowing…

According to classic Jewish writings, the Messiah will one day come to save the Jewish people. They will all gather in the land of Israel, and he will rule over a prosperous nation. No one knows when the Messiah will come, but some people speculate when and where they believe he will come. It is also believed that the Messiah will not come until the world betters itself and become more spiritual. The world will naturally become a better place, people will do better for other people and the world. Everything will be perfect with the world and the only thing that people will have to worry about is their spirituality growing. The idea of a Messiah is very ancient in Judaism. The Messiah is said to be a human leader, but not a savior, that would…

The prophecies are clues that lead to the coming of the Messiah. One of the many prophecies is Genesis 49: 10. In this prophecy, it states that the specter shall never leave Judah till tribute comes to him and until he receives the people's obedience. In Isaiah 11:1-2 it says that the Messiah will be understanding and have wisdom. In Psalm 72: 10 it says that there will be gifts brought to us by Jesus Christ, this gift is the forgiveness of our sins. In Psalm 41: 10 it's telling us that an apostle named Judas will turn on Jesus and turn him in. In Zechariah 11:12-13 we are told that Jesus will be handed over to the guards for 30 pieces of silver. In Isaiah 50:6 it shows that Jesus will accept the torture that he will receive from the guards…

In the Old Testament Messianic hope is told in Gen 3:15 where it discusses first hint of Messiah being born of a woman. Also in Gen 3:15 the serpent lures Adam and Eve into believing him and not God. In the New Testament Messianic hope is fulfilled in Jn 3:16 Jesus is born of Mary and becomes her and God's son. In Lk 1: 26-38 Mary’s yes to God to bear His son undoes Eve’s no making her the new Eve and Jesus the new Adam. In Lk 4: 16-21 Jesus reads the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and after reading it to everyone he says “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your…
