Message to Garcia
Message to Garcia

1. What would you say is the main message of this story?

I think that it is about the scarcity of and high demand for certain valuable qualities of character. A quality such as; taking on a difficult task and doing whatever it takes to get it done, without having to ask lots of questions on how to solve the problem at hand. It also means in the face of adversity, find a way to get results to get the job done. Rowan set out to do what he was asked to do and he did it. There were no excuses or foot-dragging. He didn't demand that someone give him more detailed plans of how to accomplish this assignment. He didn't hesitate. He didn't waste time. He didn't give up, although there were plenty of temptations to do so. He stayed focused on his goal. 2. Early in the story the author says “General Garcia is dead now, but there are other Garcia’s”. What is he referring to?

This statement was a little confusing to me, but I believe that again he is referring to the fact that this type of character is scare but can be found in limited quantities.

3. If you display a ‘Rowan like attitude’ in your workplace what difference do you think it might make in your career?

I think that characteristics that strong are very hard to come by, it is motivational to think that they can exists in us. Maybe the way that I think has been too skewed but I kind of think that if there was a staff member at my job that possessed these qualities they would either be viewed as fake or trying too hard, or they would be overlooked and taken advantage of. I really wish that I had a different point of view on this but the truth is that it is a tough world and sadly it is not all about your ability, can do attitude or what you can contribute.

In the book, Message to Garcia, Rowan was asked to deliver a message to General Garcia, whom was in Cuba at the time. However, General Garcia was in a place that very few people knew about which made it impossible to send him the message through a telegraph. The only way they could reach him was by somebody directly brining the message to General Garcia, which Rowan was tasked to do. When Rowan was told about this mission he was not given any more information other than what to do. He used his own means and carried out the mission, and in the face of many obstacles he did not abandon his assignment.…

In the story “A message to Garcia,” a leader needs someone to deliver a message to another leader quickly and with no mistakes. One man accepted the task not knowing where to find this other leader and only going off of the name Garcia. Today people wonʼt just accept such a task. Instead, theyʼll question the practicality, require specifics, or ask for something in return. For instance, if an employer asks their employee to mop the floors, that employee will do one or two things, stop what theyʼre doing and immediately get it done, or finish what theyʼre doing first. If that employee didnʼt stop and immediately get the job done, then the employer would most likely find another employee to complete the simple task while the first employee finishes what they were already doing. The more valuable employee in this situation would be the one who just quickly mopped the floors with no more words then “yes sir” or “yes maʼam. A person who is willing to provide their services under any condition is someone who can “deliver a message to Garcia.”…

Another strength value is using my sense of sensibility when addressing problems in the community; this is according to my ethical lens results. I am in the middle on these results, I believe that you must use sensibility but also need to be rational. If I was to favor one over the other it would have to be rationality. One strength attribute that I appreciate a whole lot is the tradition strength. I think this strength can go a long way of helping myself and others out, being able to learn from others that have been in my position and analyzing their decisions benefits me. Some may overlook this attribute; I on the other hand value this trait and have been taught this attribute from an early age and then again in the…

BODY: A Message to Garcia is a small but inspirational essay written in 1899. It tells the story of the initiative of a soldier, a class of 1881 West Point graduate. This essay exhorts the reader to apply this attitude to his or her own career and in life as an avenue to success. It starts by telling us about the conflicts growing between the United States and the Spanish, who at the time ruled Cuba. President at the time William McKinley saw a great value in establishing contact with the Cuban rebels who he thought would make a valuable ally in case of war with Spain. President McKinley asked Colonel Arthur L. Wagner to suggest a dependable officer to make contact with Calixto Garcia, one of the leaders of the rebels. Colonel Wagner suggested a man by the name of Andrew Rowan, a Captain at the time. He was assigned and accomplished a daunting mission, giving a message to Garcia. Rowan asked no questions, made no objections, requested no help, but accomplished his mission. Rowan met Garcia in the…
