Mentor Teacher Observation
I invited my mentor teacher to observe me during a 8th grade social studies class. The objective for the lesson was to have students understand the strengths and weakness of the colonial and British armies during the Revolutionary War. This lesson was also to help students practice their comparing and contrasting skills. During the lesson students read an excerpt from an alternative textbook. They then used what they learned to fill out a graphic organizer to compare and contrast the two armies. Once they have completed the graphic organizer, I had class create the chart on the whiteboard to check their understanding. Once we review the information students had two opinion questions to answer that helped my practiced the critical thinking skills. My mentor teacher gave me helpful feedback that helped to inform my instruction. She started out by naming my strengths. She explained that my biggest strength is that I have created a classroom that is safe and comfortable for students. This was evident in the students of all levels participating in the lesson and volunteering to help fill out the graphic organizers. She also explained that I did a great job of explaining and repeating the objective so all students could understand. She also explained that I did great job of using different varieties of instructional strategies and …show more content…
She encouraged me to look for opportunities to move beyond having student just repeat facts. She challenged me to assist students in apply skills and content. I whole heartily agree with my mentor, this is something I have been trying to work on this year. I feel that I tend to keep the application of skill and content for my summative assessment. I want to work on having students critically think and problem solve at all steps of the learning process. I hope this will encourage students to think critically even when they are at the baseline of their content

I wanted to let you know that because I was treated poorly at your Willoughby location, I went to your Mentor location and received the best service ever. I went into your Willoughby store where 3 employees were talking among themselves for a good 15 minutes before I was even acknowledged. The strategies I used in this lesson were critical thinking and class discussion. I wanted to get the class to think critically about sources they read. The goal was to have students question what they were reading and use the graphic organizer to help them do so. I think what went well in my lesson was the use of the graphic organizer to keep the students focused and on track. Also I think discussing the documents at the end helped to tie together the purpose of the lesson, which was to attempt to determine who fired the first shot of the revolutionary war. I also thought I did a pretty good job at facilitating the discussion. I was disappointed when more students did not participate. If I were to teach this lesson again I would try to get…

I believe that I am qualified to be a peer mentor because I live by the saying “Abstain to Attain” everyday. As a young adult among so much peer pressure, it is hard not to cave in. I understand though, drugs, sex, and drinking alcohol isn’t worth it. I have too much to lose in life if I get pregnant at a young age, or if I become an alcoholic or a drug addict. My family is counting on me as well. I will be a first generation student and I will not let them down because I gave into peer pressure and went down the wrong path.…

For my evaluation, I wanted the feedback from my mentor teacher. My mentor teacher, Cristine, is a first grade teacher at Baldwin Academy located in the Hacienda La Puente school district. Cristine has been teaching for 16 years and is someone I look up to in the teaching field. She is an honest and hardworking teacher who prides herself in having engaging projects and strategies. She is currently the leader teacher for first grade, so she is always looking for new strategies to integrate in the classroom. I’ve known Cristine for over a year now and she is someone I can always go to when I have any questions and always treats me as a equal. She is always trying to keep me updated with the current issues and policies going on in the school…
