Mentor Analysis

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” ~Edward Everett Hale. Therefore, because I am only one person, and one person may never perfect his knowledge in any field, I will do my best with what I have. For the aspects that I struggle in, I need a mentor to assist me in the creation of my paper. This mentor will need to be well informed in the field of science, exhibits good grammar and spelling skills, which I lack, and be responsible enough to turn in my assignments on time as to not penalize my overall grade. The Central High School faculty member that I feel best fits these requirements is Mr. Quick.

My paper will assess the potential negative effects of exposure to radiofrequency-modulated electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs), which are emitted by most cellular devices and if the usage of such devices can be dangerous. Due to my lack of knowledge in the field of radiology, I need someone who understands the terminology to explain any questions I may have. Mr. Quick, as an educator of science, will be able not to only help with the understanding of the material but allow to offer insights on the topic. As I write my paper, I will need a mentor that will catch most, if not all, of my spelling and grammatical errors and mistakes that I have overlooked and/or missed. Mr. Quick should be able to fill my needs, due to the fact that I have atrocious grammatical skills, upon the assumption that he is indeed well accustomed to the process of revising essays and is decent at spelling.

While I am working on my paper I need not worry about getting the assignments turned in by the due date, thus I need Mr. Quick to be responsible enough to analyze and turn in the work on time to the right place that I may focus on the task at hand.

One of the main reason cell phones might have the potential to harm us human beings are because of a form of electromagnetic radiation called radiofrequency energy. Electromagnetic radiation can be categorized in two types: ionizing and non-ionizing (National Cancer Institute). Here is why this is a problem, exposure to ionizing radiation is known to increase the risk of cancer. I am interested in participating in the Leadership Development Program because I want to be a Mentor once again. I was a mentor for high school freshmen in my senior year, but that year was enough for me to want to do it again. Just being that person who they would ask for help or for information made me feel enlightened in a way, and certainly made me happier because I knew I was positively impacting their life. And I know that mentoring high school freshmen and mentoring college freshmen is different, but I still believe that I can help those incoming students transition to a new chapter of their lives as reassuringly as possible as I did so with my group of high school freshmen.…

Radiation is all over the place, and cannot be escaped. But the amount that one is exposed to can be lowered. Cell phones do not generate large amounts of radiation, but give off an amount similar to that of a large toaster oven. With over 300 million cell phone subscribers in the United States alone, it is not hard to see why this could cause a problem (CNN Health). Tissues in close contact to a radiation-emitting device will absorb radiation, so when one holds a cell phone near their face for an extended period of time, the radiation enters his/her body through the skin (National Cancer Institute). Over the last decade, research on radiation has increased tremendously, but there were no prior studies performed, especially on children. Through recent studies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has listed cell phones as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” New studies, launched in 2010, are tracking individuals for twenty to thirty years monitoring their health related to their cell phone use (Cancer Risk).…
