Report Description
Memory Integrated Circuits (IC) Market - Global Industry Analysis and Opportunity Assessment
2014 – 2020

An integrated circuit (IC), also known as chip or a microchip is a layout of electronic circuits built over a small plate made of semiconductor material. ICs are very compact and can have up to several hundreds of transistors and other components embedded on a semiconductor plate of very small size. ICs were made possible by various experiments showing that semiconductor devices can perform the functions of vacuum tubes. The mass production and reliability of ICs ensured the rapid adoption of standard integrated circuits in place of circuits using discrete transistors. ICs can store data of over 64 GB on a single chip of size comparable to a fingernail.
There are primarily two types of ICs for memory storage viz.

Non-volatile memories are read-only memories (ROM) which have data stored on them irrespective of power supply.
The memory ICs find applications in memory based electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, medical devices, smart cards, digital cameras, communication equipments and other

Over the past 30 years the cost of Electronics has steadily decreased. The cost of electronic storage has decreased greatly over the past 30 years as well. In this paper I will be talking about the decrease in the cost of RAM and Hard Drive Storage, how much will a 100TB HDD will cost when it becomes widely available in the future, and how much memory I will be able to buy with $100 in 10 years. In 1956, IBM created the first commercial Hard Drive called the IBM 305 RAMAC which held 5MB and cost a whopping 50 thousand dollars! Electronic storage started being more widespread during the early 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that RAM and Hard Drive Storage begin to be cheap enough for the average person. Back in 1981 the price for one MB of Hard Drive storage space was $340! Most people couldn’t afford a computer back in the 1980’s because of the huge cost. Through the 1980’s the cost per MB fell from around $340 during 1981 then to $40 per MB in 1988, and finally to $9 per MB in 1990. The cost of one Bit of ram in 1981 was 0.000425 cents, in 1988 it was 0.000005 cents, in 1995 it was 0.000000158 cents, in 2000 the cost per Bit…

Dicken (2010) discusses in his book, in the last four decades the semiconductor has emerged as the dominant influence and has effected into all branches, and almost all of our daily life. But we are not usually aware of its existence. Dicken (2010) explains further when a number of transistors connected together on a single piece, so called an integrated circuit first introduced in 1950s for the computerized functional purposes, it had taken a whole roomful of valve computer. Then in early 1970s a very sophisticated microprocessor chip of silicon the size of a finger nail was created to replace the vast amount of computers to perform the same functions. Dicken (2010) then reviews, even though, the semiconductor is still a young industry but the growth of production has been astounding. In fact since 1980, the semiconductor industry is probably the fastest growing industry in the world. The global sales’ figures have shown an impressive growth from $bn 10 and $bn 210 in 1980 and 2004 respectively. The global market has been trebling every five years (Dicken, 2010).…
