Memorial Day Essay
Memorial Day Memorial Day is the day in which we honor those who have served our nation. In the United States, it is observed on the last Monday of May. Service to our nation can include a plethora of tasks. These tasks can vary from washing the toilets on a warship to fighting on the front lines. The patriotism exhibited by the people of the United States is something to be very proud of. It is a true privilege to be a citizen of such a great nation. “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” said President John F. Kennedy. It comes down to what you, as a person, are willing to do to assist your country. Will you just work for yourself in hopes of getting wealthy or will you serve your country? Service to one’s nation is a thing of honor and one should gladly take part in “defending freedom.” Although people think the phrase “serving your country” refers to military service. Currently, the American military is an “all-volunteer” force. While a draft has been done a few times, that is not the only form of service. There a number of federal non-military public service programs such as AmeriCorps, in which volunteers can provide services to the public such as public education or building public housing. Also, there are the Peace Corps, in which volunteers would help with public service worldwide. Service is not just military involvement, but more of deeds to help better the nation or people.
I intend to use the benefits of being an American to help pay back the honor of being an American. The benefits of being an American include the rights to free expression, assemble, and protest. These rights in themselves are more than what other nations will ever provide to their people. It is the things such as these rights that make America stand out in particular from the majority of other nations. In addition, America has incredible diversity and with this diversity comes a variety of perspectives, voices in the government, and

Veterans Day isn’t about relaxing at home or hanging with friends. Instead, it’s about remembering those who served in the war and died, and honoring the military soldiers. It first started on November 11, 1919. Just one American Veteran is still alive today: 108-year-old Frank Buckles. In order to recognize Veterans Day, the Dublin society should host a community walk, wear white, and bring in real soldiers to talk.…

In 1918, President Wilson established November 11 as a day to show honor and thankfulness for those who have risked their lives for our country. This day was significant because it was "The War to end all Wars,” World War I. This day was mainly set aside to show pride to our veterans of World War I. In 1938, Armistice Day, Veterans Day original name, became a legal holiday. In 1945 just after World War II ended, congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day was created to show pride to American Veterans of every war, with the oddity of a few years in which it was celebrated every year on a Monday, November 11th.…

Some people only see the power in traditional-looking monuments that are replicas of human beings. 30 years ago, a young female student changed the way we view monuments forever. In 1981, Maya Lin's simple but powerful design was chosen to honor the tens of thousands of fallen Vietnam War soldiers. Many people did not enjoy the design. However, the Vietnam Memorial Wall is a thoughtful and powerful tribute to the Vietnam veterans killed in action, as well as those still living, because it emphasizes the individual sacrifice of each soldier.…

Nationalism is a driving force behind politics and can be used by the state to change the populaces view on a certain subject. Benedict Anderson gives a strong definition of what nation really is and nationalisms historical emergence, which is key to understanding an article written by Yves Frenette that gives us a Canadian context to the concept of nationalism. After these two articles we can look at different articles and statements that were made around Remembrance day, a day for the commemoration of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served Canada during times of war and times of peace. Most recently we can compare the statements of the twenty-third Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau on this Remembrance day. As well as the…

In my community, I have displayed a great amount of service. In school, I am a peer helper during my P.E. hour to help the kids with disabilities perform P.E. like any other high school student would. I also went to a prom for kids with disabilities at my church as a date/escort for one of the kids. Over the summer I worked as a respite worker for a week to help a young girl with Down syndrome at a church camp. Also, one of my favorite times of the year is when I get the opportunity to volunteer at the softball Special Olympics. Because a lot of these kids and adults do not have the ability to perform these tasks on their own, I become a dependent companion for them to lean on. I show my leadership by doing what is right if someone were to make fun of them, and treating them like I would treat a friend. This all wraps into the patriotism for our country. I do not do these actions to just call myself patriotic; I do it because I enjoy to and believe that it is my duty as a good…

n for these veterans defending Americans of the United States in past wars, we may not be free right now. These men and women risk their lives to our freedom, and this took a great deal of bravery and sacrifice. Many veterans even died, and I have seen on the news where many more are still dying, and families are losing their loved ones. It is very sad that many people choose to risk their lives, but they knew the risks and felt it was their duty and honor to fight on our behalf. So what is a veteran to you? Is it a soldier, a person in the air force, someone fighting in the marines? That's not what they are to me. They are fighters, answering the call of duty, responding to our prayers, and most importantly that they help fight for our country, the United States of America.…

You keep walking and then you look away as if there is nothing you can do, hoping that someone else will be able to help. You know that someone needs to help out but who? It is time to give back and make a difference in the lives of Veterans. There are many things about leaving the military for a degree that can be a scary experience. Three of the hardest situations that ever occurred to me is firstly, leaving the military to enter school, secondly doing nothing for someone in need and accepting a support system like other Veterans. As an outcome of these life lessons and not being able to compete for a job once out of the military, I understand the reason for higher education and helping out a Veteran in need.…
