Melvin Shipper: A Short Story
One day I saw a man coming out of the grocery store with a bag of many delicious items. I wondered where he got the money from to get these items. But I didn’t want to intrude on this situation, so I followed the man, that I have only met once. His name is Melvin Shipper, he has been on the streets as long as i’ve seen him. This is a very long time, because I am 67 years old now. I came to these streets after the devastating repercussions of the second war. Me and Melvin have seen each other, but never actually had a conversation.
As I followed Melvin down the block he turned into san alley that every person on these streets rich or poor knows not to go down. I still followed him because I wanted to know where he was taking these delicious …show more content…
Then I realized, it was not any of my business to be intruding on his personal life. Because he made this statement, I left with a blank answer in my mind. It felt as if he left me to “fill in the blank”, and so I did.
A few days after this answerless experience, I ran into Melvin coming from his “alley hideout”. I tried to stay where he couldn’t see me, but that didn’t work, at all. He practically ran towards me with, what looked like, his head held high like a giraffe. In the midst of his panting, he what I think was apologizing, to me for what he said the day of the “alley hideout”.
As we walked down the 20 or so blocks we finally came to a “box fortress”. This “fortress” was very well built, saying that it was made of cardboard. Melvin walked in as if he knew exactly what he was doing, but I didn’t so I hesitantly walked in. When I looked up there sat, a family of 5 kids and a wife. They all looked starving, and I just stared down at them. They looked ever so pale, I never would have imagined Melvin having to house this family.
