Melinda's Relationship With Her Father
The home life of Melinda is after school she goes home and her parents leaves her a note for her to get food or something she needs to do. “Pizza. 555-4892. Small tip this time. There is a twenty dollar bill clipped to the note”(Anderson pg.14). I say that Melinda doesn’t get enough social talk with her parents instead they talk with notes. This is bad because then she can’t have a relationship with her parents.
Melinda orders her pizza and eats alone at her house on the couch even though she isn’t supposed to eat on the couch. She justs flips the dirty side of the cushions of the couch to eat, until she hears her dad’s jeep is coming. She flips the cushions back to the pretty then bolts upstairs up to her room.

    All of the negativity Melinda is experiencing is causing her harm herself in ways that fit a depressed person's profit. “I have entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. And I don’t have anyone to sit with. I am an Outcast”(Anderson 4). Melinda silence and loneliness made her feel like an outcast because she has no one to sit with. Melinda thinks that no one will help her unless they have something to gain from helping her. In Speak it states, “Heather moves to pat my pom-pom, but pulls her hand back. For a minute she looks like she’ll defend me. No,no, she won’t. It might interfere with her Plan”(Anderson 28). Due to the negativity that Melinda is experiencing it causes her to think that no one will help her. She thinks that she is not worth helping out. Melinda thinks that she is so uncool that she doesn’t think no one will invite her to a party. “This year Rachelle is going to a party thrown by one of the exchange students’ host families…. I knew I wouldn’t get invitation. I would be lucky to get an invitation to my funeral with my reputation”(Anderson 41). Melinda’s negative thought makes her lower her self esteem because she thinks that she's a loser. If Melinda spoke to Rachelle about how she felt maybe things would have been different and she wouldn’t feel this way. The negativity makes Melinda into more of a depressed person.…

    Throughout the book Speak Melinda had many topics in each of her many passages. These passages help us find out what type of a person Melinda is and what her character is all about. The entire book is narrated by Melinda. In the beginning we find out that she busted a party by calling the cops during the summer right before high school. Everyone thought she was a rat. Little do we know is that she never spoken up that at the party Andy Evans raped Melinda. During her freshman year nobody likes her and she had no friends. We do not understand anything until half way through the book which makes this book a mystery. Each of the passages reveal something and we find more and more out about Melinda as the book goes on. Some passages were more important than others. I believe that the most important passage in Speak is “Giving Thanks”. I believe that “Giving Thanks” is the most important passage in the book because we find many things out about Melinda and her family’s relationship. In the beginning of the passage Melinda says how her mother is going to work as usual and that her father was going to order pizza, for Thanksgiving. She wakes up the next morning and noticed that her mother didn’t leave yet and her mother was making a Thanksgiving meal. Unfortunately things had gone wrong and they had to get rid of the turkey. Her father tried making soup which was awful apparently. At the end of the passage Melinda was correct; they were going to order a pizza. And that was what they did. The writer tries to explain in this passage is that Melinda and her parents do not have the greatest relationship and this passage reveals a lot that her life in ways is predictable. I chose this passage because it was interesting to me that Melinda had predicted the whole day which didn’t even happen yet. She ended up having pizza on Thanksgiving which isn’t the greatest thing to eat on Thanksgiving. This passage was very ironic since Thanksgiving is about giving thanks. In ways this…
