Medieval Theatre Research Paper
I chose to do my research paper on Liturgical dramas, Vernacular dramas, Mystery plays and Morality plays during the middle ages. I chose this topic because I know very little about this subject. Liturgical dramas, Vernacular dramas, Mystery plays and Morality plays are essential to theatre because they were highly favored and performed frequently during The Middle Ages time period.
The Middle Ages lasted for roughly 10 centuries, the 5th to the 15th century. A lot of things happened in Europe during this time period. The events that took place during the middle ages helped shape the culture and style of theatre. “Mystery plays, sometimes also called miracle plays are among the earliest formally developed plays in medieval Europe. They developed from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries, reaching the height of their popularity in the fifteenth century before being rendered obsolete by the rise of professional theater”(New World Encyclopedia). When Mystery Plays was first introduce they were performed in a church. The fact that the plays were performed in the church made this genre become known as very religion based. Just like Morality Plays, Mystery plays are also a medieval dramatic form based on a Biblical story, usually dealing with the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Both mystery plays and morality plays were first used by the Europeans. Mystery plays are still being revived in Europe today. Yorkshire, England is known for its modern-day mystery plays called “York Mystery Plays”, there are 48 plays total.
