Media Autobiography
20th September 2013.

Toby de Friez.
Final Autobiography.

In this my third autobiography, I start off by reassuring you, as well as myself, that throughout the journey that is known as life - my childhood, my teenage years, into adulthood, BDFT500 and now part way through BDFT600 I am now convinced I know who has the power of over local broadcasting. The advertising, marketing, public relations group, mafia, posse, whatever you may wish to call them, this is the industry, these are the people, who influence the media and shape content along with public perceptions.
Rewinding back to my childhood, I remember my favorite media experiences. They were Barney the Dinosaur and Thomas the Tank engine. I liked these shows because they were so foreign to me but still so relatable. These cool quirky characters in far away lands, similar but yet so different to Christchurch, New Zealand. I was just but a boy and couldn’t care less about marketing, or at least that’s what I thought back then, how naive I was. The concepts of subliminal messaging, product placement, bright flashing colours and melodic theme songs were still far from my grasp of understanding. I did not understand then, the marketing techniques and the ways in which I was swayed towards brands and products because of the marketing content I saw amongst my favourite childhood shows, but the marketing and advertising following from those shows still had its effect on me. I had the toys, the music and the books.
In hot pursuit of the broadcasting trends, the advertising industry quickly followed the public from radio to television, after the post 1945 advent of television, “In America, the evening radio prime time audience dropped from 17 million to a mere 3 million homes”(Briggs, 2002). Because the advertising industry is one of the biggest funders of television there is no surprise that when the A. C. Nielson Company Invented the Audimeter in 1941, that it was soon adopted as a way for television

My father’s parents were born in a small village in the Peloponnese. They were kind and humble people that eventually made their way to Athens. My mother’s parents were born in Kafkaso, a town in Minor Asia, which at that time belonged to Greece. With the war of 1921, the Turks forced my mother’s parents to flee to Athens. They were wealthy and proud, as were many Pontian Greeks at that time. Both of my parents were born in Athens in the fifties. My mother left Athens in 1969, America bound and my father followed soon after.…

Sir Frances Bacon said, “If a man be gracious to strangers, it shows that he is a citizen of the world, and his heart is no island cut off from other islands, but a continent that joins them,” (Jenkins, 1994). This quote represents all the core values that I cherish and to which I adhere. Personal culture doesn’t have to be linked to a certain country of origin or a specific ethnicity; it can be as simple as a person’s core values. The Southern way of life is a culture all in itself.…

My project is an original song that I wrote using only the electric guitar. The song begins with three parts singing together. The first of these parts is the echoing bass notes of D and G, driving the interval of a perfect fourth. The second is a muted, rhythmic line that consists of four notes and repeats on the beat. The third is simply a high F# played using the technique of harmonics and highly effected by reverb. These three parts play together on a loop throughout the entire piece, and represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There is no real defining start to these parts, which represents the idea of a God without beginning. What is played thereafter (what might be considered the melody)…

This year my favorite Elective has been The Undergrad Media. I did this elective in second trimester and teacher was Ms. Davis. She told us that her son had started a website for young artist or undergraduate people who don’t really have an audience. Throughout that whole trimester our goal was to find a artist who we thought was talented enough to be on the website and submit them on the website and make them a profile. Many people in this Elective found people who they wanted to submit and some were even fellow students. I found a person on Instagram who was a visual artist and I wanted to make her a profile because she was talented and she didn’t really have a fan base. Through talking to her I asked her the question of where she lived…

Twenty years ago, I came bounding into a world of love and laughter. I am the only son and the second child in the family of Gregorio Paquibot and Leofe Paquibot. I, Grewendell Dela Cruz Paquibot have been born in Cebu City since October 29, 1992. I have been raised in a hard working environment and involved with well educated people since I was young with my two sisters, Nikki Louise Paquibot and Meshelle Paquibot. Currently in my first year in Cebu Doctors’ University, I am taking up Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy. As a past time, I do play sports like basketball, do body building, and any other sport that I feel like playing. I also love doing adventures. A lot of people say that I am friendly, fun and easy to be with. I believe that these characteristics are the reasons why I have a lot of friends. Companions in life are very important because I believe in the saying that “No man is an island.” We can not survive in this world by being just alone. Nothing would be possible enough if we do not have companions in life, who would help us when we are in need and would care for us. After I had a motorcycle accident a couple of years ago, upon going home from school, eveything in me changed- spiritually and most especially, physically. It was a near- death experience and definitely a life changing one. Without my family and friends who wouldn’t have been there for me, in that saddest, most terrifying time in my life, I would not have survived the greatest challenge yet that God has given me. By that experience I have learned so much the value of the life that we have and the blessings that God has given us, most especially the people around us. I couldn’t thank God enough for giving me another chance to live and for the people who cared for me and for those who have helped me overcome the trauma that the accident has brought.…

I have had a rocky start from high school until now, but that still is not initially where the rocky path began. I have had middle school troubles not too much, but just enough. I had to find something to keep me on track. School to fulfill that wasn’t even considered to be an option. The grades I created were all still well. But no teacher could ever give me enough work to distract me from the troubles that led when I went to lunch or nutrition. I can only be held responsible for my actions. I have accomplished many things in my life, other than things that I have to do with school. I did not culminate my 5th grade year because I chose to be obedient, and not listen to my teachers instructions. Even with that I still managed to keep up good grades. 8th grade culmination came up and I did not culminate another time because of behavioral issues, even with my grades being at least still decent, culminating was still not an option for me. Throughout all of my years of schooling I have always been an athlete, but grades never had the possibility of me being stopped from that until I began high school.…

How and when did I come to the realization that I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up? It began when I discovered I thoroughly enjoyed being an academy instructor for the Petsmart Grooming Academy in Chicago. I originally just managed a very successful salon for the Petsmart Corporation. My skills and extensive knowledge in the grooming industry landed me the promoted position of an academy instructor to train salon bather associates to become pet groomers. I’ve always been very passionate about grooming and continued my education in the field, so that I could be the best groomer I could possibly be. I then applied this knowledge to my associates and students in a fun learning environment. I still receive thank you emails from my students for giving them the tools necessary to succeed in the grooming industry. When I read those emails it makes feel so proud that I contributed to someone becoming a successful member of society. I had to leave Chicago for personal reasons and had to resign from my position. My husband and I decided to move back to Indiana after finding out that we were going to be parents. I received a position in Bloomington as the salon manager for Petco. I still have a passion for grooming, but the physical labor that comes with grooming heavy resistant dogs has had a physical toll on my body. I have decided it’s time for a career change! The decision to want to become a teacher was so easy for me to choose because of the joy it brought me during my role as an academy instructor.…

I am aware that one of the main themes of this course is critical self-reflection about TV watching; considering my own relationship with TV viewing and how it has changed over time as well as what my attitudes towards TV are, I can think about what they say about the kind of person I am. However, I think it would be useful to point out that I am not a media student and that this course is an elective module for my Sociology Degree. Also, I am a relatively ‘new’ British TV viewer as I lived in Greece my whole life and only came to the UK last year.…
