Media and Business in Jordan
Arab Societies Final Report Jordan Media and its implications on international business By: Dave Kiersnowski

When King Abdullah II acceded to the throne in 1999, he heralded technology as a valuable tool to prompt the resource-deficient country of Jordan, and accelerate the growth of the IT sector. This Penetration and growth helped build a generation of tech-savvy youth who used the Internet as a means to develop the country. This made Jordan now home to one of the most advanced telecommunications sectors and one of the biggest communities of technology-related business in the region.

Organizations, whether in Jordan or the Middle East, use video as a means of communication nowadays, and in the near future, the number of organizations who will conform to this is expected to rise significantly. Many companies have already seen the benefits of using video communication, first hand, at work. This includes the reduction of travel expenses and easier access to staff and clients at all times. This trend is supported by an increase in the number of employees using their smart phones and devices as they conduct business functions. About 90% of the employees in the region agree that a video-enabled organization could sway their decision to accept a job over a company that has not invested in business-class video communications. Also, about 40% of young executives feel that business-class video could provide a competitive advantage, since it would enable teams to collaborate more closely and effectively. Also, with greater reliance on the internet as a means of news consumption, many news websites have surfaced during the past decade. The readership of online news now exceeds that of printed newspapers, according to Alexa.com. The two most widely read news websites are Jfranews.com and Garaanews.com, which rank 6th and 10th respectively among the most visited websites in the country (In Focus).

To begin, social media has caused people to engage in face-to-face contact less often and hide their emotions behind their text messages. In the workplace, the use of electronic communication has overtaken face-to-face and voice-to-voice communication by a wide margin. This major shift has been driven by two major forces: the geographic dispersion of business, and the lack of comfort with traditional interpersonal communication among a growing segment of our employee population: Gen Y and Millennials. Studies show that these generations – which will comprise more than 50% of the workforce by 2020 – would prefer to use instant messaging or other social media rather than stop by an office and talk with someone. This new communication preference is one of the “generational gaps” plaguing organizations as Boomers try to manage to a new set of expectations and norms in their younger employees, and vice versa. With these trends, business managers must consider the impact on business relationships and the ability to collaborate effectively, build trust, and create employee engagement (Tardanico 3). According to Paul Booth, PhD, an assistant professor of media and cinema studies in the College of Communication at DePaul…
