Hero at the Battle of the Bulge, Army Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko gave a shining example of true bravery and an unwavering devotion to lead on January 23 1945. His actions are a constant reminder of the standard and devotion to which all service members should hold one another. May these actions always be carried in our hearts, as well as the words he spoke that day. “I said to myself, ‘Well, someone has to go,’”

And so being true to his words, Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko Lead company C up the hill they had already assaulted twice, but would not be deterred from accomplishing the mission. Before giving the order to start the push Master Sergeant Nicholas looked up saying, “Lord, I know I am going to die. Make it fast, please” These words are a prime example of his unselfish devotion to his country. Showing he was fully prepared to fight to the death for his fellow man. At this time Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko Gave the order to move forward, but nobody did. He repeated the order, nobody moved. Seeing their doubt and fear he went himself. Showing his men true leadership and dedication. After making it thirty feet up the hill, his men began to follow. Suddenly a barrette of machine gun fire rained down on his unit, pinning them down on the hill. Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko knew if the Machine gun fire were not eliminated they would all face certain death. As his men remained pinned down, Alone Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko pushed up the hill, braving a calash of automatic fire until he was close enough to throw his grenade into the German bunker. Destroying the first of two automatic machine gun posts. Killing those who survived the grenade with his rifle, Master Sergeant Nicholas Oresko pushed on as the second Machine gun focused its fire on his position.     There were many brave heroes at the battle of Fox Hill but one Private Hector Cafferata’s story stands above them all. On the first night at Fox Hill, Cafferata found his foxhole surrounded by the enemy as the Chinese passed through the gaps in the American lines during the first night of the attack. Two enemy riflemen reached the edge of their hole and Cafferata clubbed them with his shovel. One of them dropped a Thompson submachine gun. Cafferata picked it up and emptied it into another approaching squad. He and his foxhole buddy retreated back to a trench they had identified earlier, to join two other Marines shoulder to shoulder to shoot upon a wall of enemy that overran the machine gun emplacement next to them. First, I will start by giving you some background information on the Medal of Honor. In our country’s early history there were special awards voted by Congress for special contributions with the first awarded to George Washington in 1776. However, many felt that whatever actions were performed in the service on one’s country to be a common duty. The Civil War changed many perceptions in that regard. Originally authorized by congress in 1861, it’s sometimes called the “Congressional Medal of Honor.” Although the proper name of the award is the Medal of Honor, it is due to the fact that it was established by an act of Congress that most erroneously refer to it as the “Congressional Medal of Honor.” In the 136 years that the Medal of Honor has been established a total of 3,428 medals have been awarded. Twenty of these medals have been awarded to a recipient twice. The Medal of Honor (www.af.mil/heritage) is awarded to military members, while on active duty, that have gone beyond the call of duty, and have had enough courage to risk their own lives. The Medal of Honor is a bronze, five star hanging from a bronze bar with the single word, “Valor”. All recommendations for this decoration must be proven incontestably for acts of bravery that are so outstanding that it is proven to be gallantry beyond the call of duty, self-sacrifice, risk of life, and will not leave any grounds for criticism or censure.
