Quality can be observed through consistent, successful results and good customer demand. Where the education sector is concerned, learner retention and achievement, as well as Ofsted results, are the key indicators of the quality of provision (Butcher, 2003). In order to provide customers – in this case the learners – with a quality product – in this case a course - there needs to be a whole organisation attitude geared towards delivering excellence; a Total Quality Management approach: managers in further education (FE) should “promote a climate where quality is everybody’s business” (LLUK, 2005, cited in Jameson and McNay, 2007, p. 48). Planning is key to ensuring quality of provision; in order to develop a successful course planning needs to be meticulous at every level from marketing to lesson planning: a dip in quality at any level will have an impact on the product as a whole. For instance, an unsuccessful marketing campaign may lead to a low number of…

The processes of conducting Self Assessment (SA) of college programmes are outlined by the scheme providers which provide guidance for practicing self assessment of college programmes of higher education institutions to maintain and improve the quality standards simultaneously. Self Assessment is an effective tool for academic Quality Assurance and provides feed back to administration to initiate action plans for improvement. Quality in higher education is a dynamic entity and therefore various factors that determine quality of higher education must be set in equilibrium at a level that matches with national expectations and standards. These factors include, inter alia, leadership, quality of faculty, quality of students, curriculum, infrastructure facilities, research and learning environment, governance,…

The qualifications consist of a mix of units - some competence-based and some knowledge-based units. The knowledge-only unit (which are titled 'Understanding the principles and practices of assessment') allow anyone who is interested in or needs to know about assessment and quality assurance - but is not a practitioner - to acquire knowledge and information about the roles. Successful achievers will understand the principles of assessment and internal quality assurance and have the knowledge to develop and improve systems at their centre.…

At Business the functions of internal quality assurance cover a diverse spectrum. However, from the start I must ensure that the candidates are at a level and position to carry out the assignments to meet the criteria involved. I ensure that the employer is involved from the outset and is fully aware of the work and support the candidate will need and be expected to submit. This is done through discussions with the employer and learners and by the completion of a pre-enrolment form. This information is required to ensure consistency with the qualification which, in my case is the NVQ L2 in Team Leading and also the NVQ L3/5 in Management. I ensure that I provide the employer and candidate with the information about all the procedures in place by the College to ensure a quality end product and also meet the learner’s requirements should they have any specific learning needs. The learner also goes through and induction workshop and all areas of the NVQ are explained especially the procedures. The employer also signs the individual learning plan incorporated within the NVQ stating that they support the learner and agree with there role as an employer.…

In my point of view assessment is a testing tool by which a teacher or assessor can use to detect the outcomes of teaching, learning or assessment process with the learners by collecting feedbacks. Hence Assessment is an ongoing process and it can be carried out in different stages or different times of a course or apprenticeship programme. Assessment also contributes to evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of a course or apprenticeship programme and improving the quality of learning delivery.…
