Measures of Variability The measures of variability specify the grade to which the scores from the survey that Barbara Tucker and Debbie Horner decided to administer to all 449 BIMS employees. This survey consisted of a series of questions that ranged from one to ten. The large numbers gathered from this survey will expose the greater variability of the scores. The measures of variability are divided into four categories that are: the range measures, the average deviation, the variance, and lastly the standard deviation. The range is the distance from the lowest score from the survey to the highest score. It is very unstable because throughout the survey scores vary a lot. The average deviation introduces the concept of the variance squares all of the different values, the standard deviation in the BIMS survey was used as a statistical measurement of possibilities that could be causing employees to have low morale and to have a low retention rate as well. The find the variability BIMS was to identify the range, mean variance and standard deviation. The scale that was provided ranged from one to five, one represented a negative response and five a positive response. The mean was an average of all numbers which was then, and lastly the standard variation provided BIMS the number of how 78 employees provided raw data that was coded and entered into the spreadsheet (University of Phoenix, 2014).
