From a young age, girls are taught how to behave and how to dress in order to not raise attention. They are taught that if a boy is mean to them or hits them, it simply means that he likes them. Boys, on the other hand, are taught to not show their emotions. They are taught that aggression is equal to manliness. They are taught that “to play like a girl” is an insult. Both boys and girls are born into a society that places limitations on them based on their gender. These ideas and values are ingrained into their minds and it is something that they are given no choice but to believe in.…
Blum summarizes in the end that there are still ongoing studies to research the difference of aggression in males to females. Adolescent females are being engaged with more competitive activities to test for different hormones. It is still unsure but with the current statistics,…

Cyber bullying and face-to-face bullying are to major concerns in today’s society, the movie Mean Girls and the novel Destroying Avalon have themes about bullying in them. Bullying is a phenomenon that has existed even before it became documented. Because of its prior history, many forms, and different perceptions of what bullying is, there is a great extent of definitions that constitute as bullying behavior. Beginning in the late 1990’s, bullying behavior became a hot spot for researchers as school shootings increased because of the negative experiences that victims of bullying had encountered particularly in 1996 (Parkay, Hass & Anctil, 2010). Increasing school violence called for the attention of school- based bullying and its different forms. Bullying takes place in two different forms that is, traditional bullying and cyber & indirect bullying. Traditional bullying refers to physical and overt forms of bullying such as name-calling, hitting, shoving, and stealing (Arnold & Rockinson-…

Inthe movie mean girls , the main themes are belonging and changeas it shows the development of Cady Herron as she goes from ‘home schooled jungle freak’ to ‘cold hard shiny plastic’ to ‘actual human being’…
The film that I chose to write about is a Paramount Pictures presentation titled Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan and also featuring a handful of Saturday Night Live cast members, including Tina Fey the author of this picture. The reason behind choosing this film is because it has a unique style of introducing characters, transitioning between scenes, and various tools to help spice up the film. Being one of my personal favorites, Mean Girls is a comedy about a home schooled teenage girl who enters high school for the first time. She tries to figure herself out by where she can fit in and who she needs to become friends with.…
Sociology is everywhere we look, its everything thing we are, and can be described within everything we do. The traditional focuses of sociology have included social stratification, social class, culture, social mobility, religion, secularization, law, and deviance. As all spheres of human activity are affected by the interplay between social structure and individual agency, sociology has gradually expanded its focus to further subjects, such as health, medical, military and penal institutions, the Internet, and the role of social activity in the development of scientific knowledge. Looking through films you can see many sociological themes. I chose to look at “Mean Girls” and pull the sociological themes out.…
Belonging and Identity: Since Cady has been home schooled all of her life, her first high school experience is uniquely able to demonstrate to what degree belonging constructs identity, particularly for adolescents within a high school setting. Her first day of class she is completely isolated because she doesn't know anyone and has no one to sit with at lunch. Fortunately for her, she's saved by "The Greatest People You'll Ever Know" who take her aside and initiate her into the mysteries of high school life, particularly in this school. Throughout the year, Cady's identity will be constructed and re-constructed as much by who she hangs out with as by what she does.…
Also, research shows that physical abuse tends to occur more often among boys than girls at all educational levels (e.g., elementary, high school, college). Also, male college students tend to bully and be bullied through physical and verbal forms of bullying (e.g., name-calling) more often than college girls. Also, boys may be more accepting of bullying, than are girls. That is, boys may like a girl even if she bullies others. In contrast, girls may still befriend boys that bully, but tend to dislike girls that bully. At the core of these differences is children’s and, indeed, societal beliefs about acceptable behaviors for boys and girls. Many people may see bullying among boys as “just boys being boys.” So, girls may accept this attitude and tolerate boys’ bullying. However, girls may be less accepting of girls who bully if it is seen as overly…

This film focuses on the controversial topics of feminism, immigration, Latino Health inequality through art, reproductive justice, and human rights. Where in the 1960’s women who went to seek medical care in the county hospitals especially those giving birth went back home while sterilized to save taxpayers money and control population among Mexican immigrants. This procedure was a forced one as mothers signed them while going into labor and others didn’t remember signing them. Civil rights movement arose at that time.…
This shows the viewer that girls are just as vicious as boys bullying one another, however it is done differently and could get away easier than boys. As it was mentioned in an article that, “the boys experience direct experiences of bullying, such as physical aggression, and girls are more involved in situations of indirect violence, such as malicious gossip”. (Silva, Pereira, Mendonca, Nunes, & Oliveria, 2013). While boys bullying is often physical, and verbal; girls are more on social, and verbally bullying, it happens towards both gender. As I was reading an article that “Research has had identified a trend towards gender difference in preferred modes of aggression as indirect, rather than direct aggression, appears to be the preferred modus operandi of girls (Rivers, Besag & Duncan, 2009). Bullying does occurs in both genders. Instructor, teachers and guardians needs to be aware that no matter what gender they are, children do go through bullying regardless. As Katherine Mortimer has mentioned in her article that “Girls can be mean. Boys will be boys. These are just a few of the cliches people use when kids are bullied.” (Katherine, 2013). Parents should avoid generalizing the child, because they will begin to believe that bullying is an okay act to use on…
Female friendships are one of the most important dimensions of an adolescent girl’s life. Peer relationships and friendships are critical in the developing adolescent’s identity, behaviors, and overall health. These peer connections influence all areas of development including emotional, physical, spiritual, social, and cognitive. The movie “Mean Girls” addresses social behaviors and experiences that are common in female peer relationships throughout the adolescent years. “Mean Girls” has brought attention to girls mean behaviors and portrays a dark side of female peer relationships, in which girls act as bullies and use relationships to express anger or power through rumors, exclusion, secrets, or gossip. This movie shows the significant…
Mean Girls, a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters, with the screenplay written by Tina Fey, describes how female high school social cliques operate and the effect they can have on girls. The two main characters in this movie, Cady Heron and Regina George, may have a world of differences between them, but they are also very much alike. They are alike in the way they deal with situations, but unalike in the way they handle the consequences of those actions. Throughout the movie, it will become evident that Cady is the better person both morally and physically.…
