Meals On Wheels Case Study
I am currently fulfilling my passion as social work intern at Interfaith Ministries – Meals on Wheels (MOW) which is located on 3303 Main St. Houston TX. 77002. However MOW just recently expanded their routes to service some parts of Galveston. There are some eligible clients that qualify for additional meals such as breakfast, frozen weekend meals. Having the luxury of great health and family, it can be difficult for me to see outside the realm of comfortability and see the daily hardships people experience. There are so many people without housing, stability, and monetary resources, and these people often find themselves wondering where they can find help and figure out what to do next during trying times. One place people can reach out for assistance is Ronald McDonald House Charities. The nonprofit provides housing and food for families with a critically ill child in the hospital. The forty-two room house aims to provide comfort and support for families living through their worst nightmare. The charity provides this support by its network of staff and volunteers who prepare food for…

I intern at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, that provides comprehensive health care and support services to youth from 10 to 24 years old. At the beginning of the internship, I was assigned to serve the Harlem community which has high proportions of Black and Hispanic residents who have low socioeconomic status. Many of the Harlem residents live below the Federal Poverty Level and spend more than 30% of their monthly gross income on rent. Harlem has higher unemployment rates than New York City in general. In addition, Harlem has a high percentage of people without a high school diploma. As a result, many of the Harlem residents have no credential to get high-paying jobs. The primary languages spoken at home are Spanish, French and Chinese. The majority of the Harlem residents has low English proficiency.…

The problem of homelessness in America is escalating day by day. Homelessness doesn’t discriminate between races or skin color, although some may be a bit more prevalent. Homeless people range from former veterans, to immigrants, to families struggling to find a solid paying job and a stable lifestyle. Also, although most people relate a homeless person to an underdressed, rugged man, the homeless population now leans towards families. There are more and more homeless families on the streets every day. Homeless families can be an effect of discrimination because of race, a result of violence in a family, or an effect of a physical disability or mental illness.…

I changed my service project to something that I did recently in girl scouts that I loved. For this project, my Girl Scout troop and I spent four meetings, a total of six hours, making ornaments for Alachua County Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is an organization that provides meals for the elderly or people that are unable to access meals. In total we made 150 Christmas ornaments. The ornaments were given with meals during the month of December. The reason why I enjoyed this project was because I knew receiving a handmade ornament would give people who may be going through hard times, joy. For this project I was responsible for creating “pom-pom ornaments.” For this ornament, I took a Styrofoam ball and glued little pom-poms all around…
